I think there was a time where coaches -like Gable and Smith- could expect to draw top recruits for two or three decades with little competition.
In this era I'll predict that time span for "coach appeal" will drop to 10 years or so, as opposed to 25+ years.

"Metcalf sure got a ringing endorsement today from Jordan Burroughs..."

“This is a massive hire. I wrestled Brent Metcalf on a couple of occasions in college and he beat me every time. He is an extremely competitive individual and a hard worker. Honestly, he was a scary, dominant, and hard-nosed wrestler.
As scary as he was in college, when I started wrestling for Team USA, I had the fortune of being his roommate at a few different World Championships and training camps. I got to see the human side of Metcalf, and he was just an awesome dude. He carried an aura and mystique around him, but I got to break through the tough exterior to see the realness in who he was. He gave everything he had - every lift, every practice, every run.
Brent is rooted in hard work, discipline and consistency. He's someone I respect tremendously. I have watched him become a man and a great coach, and I know he was a phenomenal competitor, so he is going to do a great job as head coach at Iowa State.”
