Discussion Topic: Tom Ryan named RevWrestling's "Coach of the Year"
Ken Ramsey Sr. added to this discussion on April 17, 2008

Quote from Bob Preusse's post:

"1) He (Tom Ryan) inherited a lot of talent. ---yes Hank, BUT Ohio st had 2 straight last place Big Ten finishes and 2 very low NCAA finishes, like 45th and 54th , in the 2 years before Ryan. Ryan gets credit for righting the ship, without question. "

Bob:
Don't you think some of the injuries that happened during those two years may of had something to do with the finishes? In all of Russ's years at Ohio State, those two years had the most injuries of his tenure. Jaggers, Bergman, Mueller, Enright, and Maurer all suffered season ending or disabling injuries at one time during those two years.

Ken,
you know the injury situation in those years better than i do. If you say injuries were a big problem then i accept that. I always concede to the man who has reliable info.

here is another Must-Sign , i asked Cael Sanderson what he thought of Chris Phillips, Cael just emailed me back, i quote him verbatim: "Phillips is very impressive. I don't remember anyone like him. Great athlete, great speed and a tenacious style and mentality. It's going to be fun to watch his career."

Cant "build a fence" around Ohio with only 9.9 to use, but there are Ohio Must-Signs, not every year but they do occur. Taylor is one, Phillips is one, and i think we know of a couple more.

I'm reading about who we should recruit at 174 etc. and the name Mills from University was mentioned. But I'll tell you what, I saw Phillips handle him at Brecksville, and have seen video of Chris at Ironman & States, and he is amazing. I can't imaging how brutally tough he'll get in the next 3 years. I'll definetly be going to Ironman next year to see if anyone can even give him a match. I hope he goes back to Disney Duals this summer, maybe with the rest of the "Monroeville Four"?? <smile>

In all fairness, Phillips didn't really handle Mills in the Brecksville finals. He beat him 6-3, although to everybody there, it was clear that Mills wrestled a nearly perfect match in order to keep it that close. Mills looked good though, scrambled well and kept attacking, producing some legitimate scoring situations. Phillips was clearly the better wrestler, and I say this as a US alumni, but he hardly handled Mills.

BobP,
Collin Palmer seems to me to be a top priority recruit for this years class. He is ranked #1 and sure to be in the top 5 of the overall recruiting class next year. I do know he will have a heck of a test at the Ironman to start the season off.

Collin and David Taylor are definitely "must-gets" for next year if we are just looking at one year. Long term, it gets more complicated. Collin is important not only because he is a stud but because he might bring in more Ed's kids, specifically Jamie Clark, although Clark has stated he would consider not wrestling collegiately in order to train in freestyle.

However, you have to think that David Taylor and Collin Palmer will command a good amount of money. You can't leave the cupboard bare for the year after, when Logan Stieber will be looking to sign somewhere. Stieber will be, hands down, the most important recruit nationally, again, not only because of his skill, which is tremendous, but because if you land Logan, you have an inside track on Hunter, and thusly an inside track on Phillips and Tessari. Landing one doesn't mean you land the other three, but it sure can't hurt.

HOT TIP: i think the Buckeyes will sign a STUD at a wt they need help in the next week or so--- Plus expect Ohio State to very possibly get a good transfer or maybe more than one before next season.

We will see.

One would have to think that Collin is almost a shoe-in at OSU. Taylor on the other hand --- I'm not so sure on.

For what BobP is saying -- biggest need areas for next season is easily 174 followed by, IMO, 285.

---------------

fact is Cael Sanderson at Iowa St wants David Taylor badly, enough said about Taylor's ability and potential. ---Plus what high school is Taylor from ? will they be churning out mega talent over the next decade ???

Would any of these stud signings or transfers be in the 174 range?

I we are talking current D1 guys that could potentially be transfers then let's speculate.

Mike Miller-Suprise AA 2 years ago at 165. Stewart seems to be the starter at 165 and Miller RS this year but competed some at 174. I think most presume he will step in at 174 next year for CM with Sinnott graduating. The Chips have depth at these weights with stude recruits Cubberly and Bennett coming in next year. Could Miller come home to Ohio and were the Scarlet and Gray?

David Erwin-Seemed to have an up and down year this year for Penn State where he inititally lost his wrestle off but had some quality mid season wins before having a tough postseason. Seems like a Tom Ryan type guy and would be a significant upgrade over anyone we have had in the last few years here.

Alton Lucas-Former Tom Ryan recruit follows him to tOSU a couple years later? This one is a long shot.

Almost anyone would have to be stoked about the workout situation (Pucillo and Sponseller), coaching and the opportunity to be a part of a national championship caliber team.

Who did I forget?

I know there are many coaches that want David badly, but probably only 3 schools with a legit shot.

Big transfer??? Of those that Scott listed, I could only see Miller as being any chance at all based upon their lineup -- but I don't think that has much of a chance either.

Mike Miller would never leave C Michigan, as far as i know. C Mich is such a great program, esp for a MAC school, and their wrestlers all respect coach Borrelli so much.
