Discussion Topic: "Potential" Ohio State Lineup for 08/09

Dave Rella was an excellent student at Walsh Jesuit--- and from talking to him Saturday he seemed confident his credits would all transfer to Ohio St where he has in fact applied for admission. If some don't he is prepared to go to Summer school.
since he got a Full release according to what he told me, it appears he will be ready to rumble at 174 for the Buckeyes in the Fall, assuming he is admitted.

Excellent news. Rella returns home and fills a huge hole for the Bucks. Lineup just got
much
better. Bucks should be able to put a capable wrestler on the mat at every weight class next season.

I would think that Magrum now gets a redshirt and then backs up Pucillo before coming in and starting for his final 3 years at 184. This would be an ideal situation for Magrum getting 2 years to work out with Pucillo and coming in seasoned and ready to go.

Does the recruiting list have to be complete
today?
Didn't I read that somewhere?
And I'm hearing ten thousand different things...
will Rella have to sit a year?

Maggie,
No. I said I talked with Rella last Saturday and he got a full release. That means he won't have to sit.

But what does that
mean!?
Who decides if it's a "full" release? Why do some people get "full" releases and "not-so-full" releases? Does it have to do with the reason they're getting "released" ??
Aaaah!

It has to do with whether or not the school he is leaving gives it to him. It is their choice whether or not he can wrestle next year and apparently they said it was ok.

Two things:
1. When does OSU's recruitment list have to be
final?
Didn't I read somewhere that it's soon?
2. When did "Cody" Magrum become "C.J." Magrum?

I've got a scoop on Maggie... but it isn't too incriminating!
I am a co-director for Ohio's women's team for USAW Junior Nationals. When looking at the list of past female wrestlers, one name stood out as having competed in a USGWA event.
So, spill it, Maggie! Are you still a grappler or was it a girl's season experiment?

Maggie:
I'll explain the process because it can be very confusing.
There are three things at play here:
1. The NCAA rule that prohibits a school from communicating with an athlete at another school unless permission to contact is granted by the athlete's current school.
2. The NCAA rule that requies an athlete to sit out one year of competion when the athlete transfers to a new school. This rule may be waived by the school from which the athlete has transferred thereby making the athlete eligible immediately at his new school. This waiver is often called the "one time exemption" or a "release."
3. The Big Ten rule that states that once an athlete has received scholarship money from one Big Ten School he can never receive scholarship money at another Big Ten School. (This rule can be waived by the Big Ten if you meet certain hardship requirements.
In David's case the situation worked this way (I will leave out all of the issues regarding the press release and David's alleged dismissal from the team as I am addressing those matters directly with PSU):
After first being denied persmission to contact OSU, PSU relented and gave him permission to contact any school he wanted too. Accordingly, at that time he was free to talk to any school about transferring.
After he left PSU, altouhg the press release stated that he had been granted a release, he had received no information from PSU that they would agree to grant him his one time exemption from the NCAA rule requiring him to sit out a year.
Finally, last Friday, PSU informed OSU that they would agree to grant David his one time exemption thereby making him eligable to compete this year.
Long story short, David will be eligible to compete this season and is training right now with the goal of making an immediate impact.

Gary: At this point it sounds as if the only obstacle left is for David to officially be accepted at OSU. Is that correct?

You caught me! Touche...
<thumbsup>
Yes, yes, yes. I wrestled for two years in junior high, and I have more respect in the whole world for girls who can stick it out in high school. I didn't get to wrestle very much (our coach was a bit of a chauvenistic pig, cough cough) so I decided to watch from the side for the following four years in high school. And now I'll have five more at OSU! I went to girls state in both 7th and 8th grade, and girls nationals once too. What an experience! Those entire girls teams are outstanding! Though, I still know that I want to coach the boys.
<smile>
I think being a former wrestler gives me a touch of an advantage over most stat girls, being that I've actually been there and done it, so when I hear them say "why can't he just get up?!" I can fill them in. I also notice I'm usually the only mat-maid yelling "Double-grape him if you can!!"
<thumbsup>
Finally, mat maids get better benefits. I get to go to the huge tournaments and see all these awesome athletes competing... but I don't have to cut weight!
<smile>
