Discussion Topic: HS superstar Logan Stieber commits early to Buckeyes

Bob:

First, you are proving my point correct for me. Stieber does dance through the D3 state tournament and nobody else in his weight classes have been nationally ranked. That's one very good reason why a loss there would be "big" in comparison to a loss in the finals of his first varsity tournament ever to a nationally #1 ranked wrestler. Another would be that it would happen later in his career. Another would be that, yes, losing at the state tournament would be harder to take for most wrestlers than losing at the Ironman. It's like the Midlands of old and the NCAA tournament. Winning Midlands would be awesome, but the main goal is to be an NCAA champion.

Second, again I'm being misquoted. I agree that the loss (when taken in the context of being his only loss of his career or that it's the only meeting betwen him and Taylor) is big. But that was never what I was talking about as illustrated the Jaggers example, et al. The point I've made is that that loss is not a big loss compared to the other losses of the all-time Ohio high school greats.

your logic is flawed, Dan--- Stieber has no other loss than Ironman 2006, thats WHY it looms so big right now, its the only one he has. (when and if he ever get another high school loss we can then debate how "big" it is in comparison.)

Dan, u r misunderstood perhaps but Not misquoted -- i re-print your words verbatim because the last thing i would want to do is misquote anyone. --And you are the one who keeps talking about Div III state, who cares about Div III state right now?

i see this differently than you, i see Stiebers loss as huge because he had a good chance to be the first undefeated 4Xer in Ohio history .

Fine then, misunderstood not misquoted.

My point is (and always has been) that that compared to the other all-time Ohio high school greats, a loss in your first ever varsity tournament to a nationally #1 ranked wrestler is not that big.

In that context only.

----------

Only 16 wrestlers in Ohio high school history have ever won all four state tournaments in their career. Most of them have multiple losses.

1. Mark Zimmer (76-79) - ?
2. Jim Jordan (79-82) - Lost only 1 match
3. Jeff Jordan (80-83) - Lost only 1 match
4. Erik Burnett (84-87) - ?
5. Dan Hanson (84-87) - ?
6. Ken Ramsey (84-87) - ?
7. Willie Wineberg (91-94) - Lost only 2 matches
8. Johnny McGhee (93-96) - Lost only 3 matches
9. Jared Opfer (96-99) - Lost only 4 matches
10. Harry Lester (98-01) - Lost only 2 matches
11. Ryan Lang (00-03) - Lost only 17 matches
12. C.P. Schlatter (00-03) - Lost only 1 match
13. J Jaggers (01-04) - Lost only 3 matches
14. Dustin Schlatter (02-05) - Lost only 4 matches
15. Lance Palmer (03-06) - Lost only 6 matches
16. Tony Jameson (05-08) - Lost only 6 matches

None of them have gone through undefeated and only C.P. Schlatter, Jim Jordan, and Jeff Jordan have gone through with only one loss.

*I don't have the win-loss records of Zimmer, Hanson, Burnett, and Ramsey though.

by comparison since the first Ironman in 1994 , Ohio has crowned TEN state champ 4Xers---- the Ironman so far has ZERO 4X champs--- and plenty of NCAA AAs and even finalists and champions have wrestled in the Ironman for 4 years.

as Greg Urbas said years ago, "The Ironman is like fargo, where state champs go to die."

whose kidding who ?? Logan Stieber would give anything for the chance to re-wrestle that Ironman finals match with Taylor in 2006.

4x State Champ Dan Hanson has one loss of which I'm certain. My younger brother, Ron, beat him in the finals of the Rich. Heights tourney when Hanson was a frosh.

You know, I think Bob is talking apples and oranges but I'll give it one more try.

It is entirely possible Stieber would like to re-wrestle that match. You can't re-write the book on an undefeated career.

It is another story to argue that a loss his freshman year to a sophomore with the credentials of Taylor would be as important in his historical ranking as a loss at Ironman his senior year to anyone. If he runs out the string until his senior year then loses, there can't be any question that loss would have to figure larger than any of the others, even if that loss is at Ironman. Or Brecksville. Or the Columbus School for Girls Holiday Quad.
