Discussion Topic: Point for fodder... Gene Smith and Notre Dame

It will be interesting to see if they change their academic policy in coming years to accomodate a better football and basketball team. You can only lose for so long before your big money alumni get upset. The question Weiss will have to answer is, what have you done for me lately? and he will fire back with what are you going to do to help me win.

Football is particularly brutal in its assessment of a coach. Factor that you are talking about Notre Dame Football and that is a tough place to lose. Rudy is a great story but this is no fairy tale with a happy ending in sight.

I do remember a prominent ND alum as referencing the academic standard for their recruiting woes. Then again, excuses are only as good as the paper on which they are written.

Taking physics your freshman year ?? let's be realistic, thats not in many students plans .

Rudy was and is a real person. <angry> Please do NOT speak ill of him...or his greatness!!! ("fairy tale" Mr. Holman!?!?! tsk, tsk)

It was great to read today's Dispatch and the comments from both the University officals and Gene Smith. Class, class, class, class, class, class, class.

Go Buckeyes!!!

Mark-

Maybe you misunderstood me. I know the Rudy story is true; he had a brother that went on and wrestled at the U of Nebraska per Jim Scherr. It was the oldest Reuttinger at ND that paved the way.

With regard to fairy tale, I am talking about the Weiss era at ND.

Bob-

Academic toughness would be dependent upon which Physics. From past experience there would be a Physics 100 for the general student population and then a Physics 120 series for those who intend on becoming MDs some day. The two courses would contrast in depth and scope and consequently the level of commitment it took to pass the class. I don't know Notre Dame policy, but I would suspect that the general course would the one mandated by the school. I admit that I could be wrong. I don't know. The whole idea that some student athletes would be intimidated by a single course is possible.

All state funded universities have coursework and degrees that are manageable to the average student. I know many a wrestler at tOSU who could not juggle the rigors of Hellickson style training and more time intensive degrees and they consequently left the wrestling team or switched to a less time intensive major.

Obviously, there is a tradeoff and the goals are sometimes in conflict.

I agree with Rex wholeheartedly. Physics at the 101 level is not physics at the 201 level. Also, don't take the Irish job and then make bogus excuses about academics. You know what you are in for when you sign on. Get to the Grotto and pray for bigger and smarter athletes.

Don't coach wrestling at Cornell or Haaaaaarvard if you want the chance to get every top recruit and compete for the National Title every year. Just tough places to do it.

Rex,

i am actually relying on legendary St Ignatius football coach Chuck Kyle, whose teams have won a record nine big school state titles.

When someone asked him about a year ago whether Notre Dame could ever be a perrenial football power again, Kyle replied with words to the effect that "very few freshmen want to take physics their first year."

i figured Kyle should know something about it. But i'm not an expert in college curiculum.
