I win conso-semi and need to beat some 10th grader from Cardinal Stritch. This 10th grader was tough as nails Dave Wlodarz (would be a state runner-up). I lose 3-2. Five of the top nine guys in the Brackman were from the NW. If you get out, you place at state. I could not get out.
"

I had the "pleasure" of wrestling Wlodarz my junior year, which I believe was his senior year at a tourney. He was a tough dude.

Waited a year to start school and went to Wright State University. Most fun I ever had was college. I remember the Ohio Open each year hosted by Wright State. It was a big time college tournment back then. Prob 60-70 teams and 6-7 Big Ten teams. OSU, Wisc, Mich, Purdue, indiana. Got my first college win over some kid from tOSU. WSU was a very good D2 team back in the day.
"

Wrestled at the Ohio Open a few times when I was at UD, it was quite the tourney. Had the champ, runner-up and 4th place finisher in my weight class (142) competing. Fortunately, I did not have to face any of them.

Reading Gary Lusson’s post reminded me...introductions are in order!

It’s time to update the thread with new forum blood bearing old tales of sacrifice, bravery, and perseverance.

As the years slip by, I'm recognizing fewer members of the dot.net family.

If you haven't introduced yourself, please peruse this thread and tell us who you are and what you've done.

Quote from Mark Niemann's post:

"Hi, Justin.

Umm. H...hi. I...uh...

I...

I'm not real good at these types of things. Uh...um... I'm Mark. I participated on the wrestling team at Groveport Madison in Columbus, OH back in the mid-90s. I was thrust into our varsity line-up as a freshmen for two combined reasons: a) our starting junior couldn't cut from 130 to 103 after doing it twice and b) I was years away from hitting puberty. 100 pounds soaking wet. And well, after making varsity as a freshmen, your pooh don't stink and you don't have to improve - or so I thought.

Three coaches over four years probably didn't help things.

After successfully attaining 4x sectional qualifier, I joined the U.S. Army, returned home and started coaching. And it was at that point that I realized how awful I was, and that becoming a student of the sport would only help me in my quest of trying to help kids be more than just a 4x sq.

Thanks, guys. I needed that."

Time to update:

I don't think I've ever replied to this thread. Long-time .net reader, sporadic contributor.

I only wrestled in high school (Centerville), graduated in 2010.

Freshman year was my first ever year wrestling. Was mostly there to hang with friends. Ended the year sub .500 at freshman tourneys.

Worked my way into the varsity lineup my sophomore season via mid-year wrestle-off. Placed at my conference tourney with basically just a head-and-arm. Still pretty terrible but if you were sloppy and out of shape I could get you.

Junior year won the conference and made districts. Not a ton of offense to speak of but had picked up a low single and was tough to score on.

Senior year 4th in D1. The two guys I lost to at state both ended up as multiple time NCAA AA's (Habat, Harger), so I can't be too upset with that. Neither of them won that bracket, by the way.

Graduated from OSU in 2014, moved to NYC for work, where I still live. I try to make a dual or two per season, and Big 10's or NCAA's. Sometimes both if I can swing it.

A D1 placer in your 4th year of wrestling? That’s impressive, Brian.

Did you wrestle year round?

Agree--I'm impressed. You must have been a focused, driven individual. I'm guessing you're a good athlete as well. From a frosh first year wrestler to 4th in D1 is equivalent to some youth star winning a couple state titles.

Here you can see his progress in the tournament.
I remember the kid from Twinsburg as being super polite and a real stud.

I wrestled year round starting my sophomore year. I had a sort of flip of the switch for me that year--I had thought I was working hard in pre-season, and then lost my wrestle off. I was lucky then to have a teammate that showed me how to really work hard.

After that I pretty much wrestled anywhere and everywhere I could.

I had some really good coaches, and parents that didn't push me to do anything, but were willing to drive me anywhere to get some mat time in. So I was lucky, and also determined.

Comar over Habat at 152 must have been a big upset at the time.

I had their Mentor District finals match the week before this.
Actually something interesting is that for 3 years in a row, the two finalists I had at Mentor met the following week in Columbus for a championship.
