"Comar over Habat at 152 must have been a big upset at the time."
|
For sure. Habat was defending champ and ranked highly nationally. Harger was also ranked.
Comar was a multiple sport athlete and mostly unknown outside of the state, and beat them both. He could've been a force if he wrestled in college, but I think he ran track and played some football instead.

Went back to page 1 and was reading these through. Saw you posted my HS state brackets. Still not cool.
Update from 2015.
Finished time coaching at Mechanicsburg in 2017 that ended with 3 state champs, a runner-up, 3rd, and one more placer -- and a team title. Changed jobs to Bellefontaine to be closer to home and in same district as my then Sr. and Fr. daughters.
Have coached at Bellefontaine as the HC for past 4 years. Had a state champ, state placer, District champ (covid year) on boys side and State Champ (who also was 2x runner-up) and a 3x placer (3rd, 3rd, 2nd) on girls side. I'll be taking the HC job of the girl's program this year at Bellefontaine.
I also am a girl's golf coach. A job that is AWESOME!!!
Edit: and I got to be in Detroit to see Kaleb podium. And will be at the West Point Graduation to watch Tyler Wetzel (3x placer) gradute. What a thrill!!

When goals aren’t reached, no matter the level, it’s disappointing.

I actually don't believe I've added. Be prepared. I was forced to pick a sport my frosh year and chose wrestling due to my size. I had been to a meet several years prior to watch st.marys vs celina (wbl rivals) and thought it was the most boring thing in the world.
Frosh year I started at 103, won 2 matches by void and had 1 pin. Pinned something like 21 times.
Jv at 112 and 119 soph and junior season. Dropped to 112 as a senior and did quite well considering my start. Ended the season at 31-7 , finished no worse than 3rd at any tournament, wbl league champ and sectional champ. Districts was a new ball game, I lost to a north Ridgeville guy Rabung 6-4 (2 or 3x state qualifier and he took 2nd at districts).
Lost in the match to go to top 6 3-0. I was teched by Dave Penny of Milton union that year and he was either 5th or 3rd so that's the skill level I was at.
I had Said I was done but the itch came back after a year or so. Tried to get a team at rhodes/osu lima.
Ended up at Toledo and wrestled club at 133. Frosh year was my peak, made nationals and was top 10. (Ncwa only placed top 6 at that time for club).
After that, I competed and trained hard but my heart was not in it, weight cutting and lack of a social life weighed on me. I regret my finish to this day but we all have those I guess. At nationals I wrestled the eventual runner up and was teched. Again, I knew where I ranked.
Coached for several years and got to watch the Cisco boys Excell. I haven't coached in many years due to my job but it's been something on my mind to get back into to some extent.
Wrestling made me mentally strong and taught me how to never quit. It's something that I've taken into a new avenue of playing darts and I've had some luck winning state a few times and vegas. It's nice to compete and not have to cut weight. (The beer is excellent as well lol)

That's some impressive perseverance, Jeff.
Which high school did you wrestle at?
