Must have waited until finals were over. Does he still project as a 184?

Boom! Nice. After the Welsh news Bucks pick up a trio of really good transfers and two big recruits. For a team that has been relatively conservative in the transfer market this is a clear pivot in strategy. Probably a needed one too.

So how long before Rogo / Shumate / or Geog hit the portal?

The coaches have been trying to redshirt Rogotske for the last two years. I doubt he transfers. Is Fishback a 184? Or a 197? I think the former. I’m not sure I see any of them transferring this year, they all likely, and rightfully so, should think they are the best option. My guess is that if someone were to leave it would be after next year once things shake out. In theory Shumate and Geog would be done with a four year degree and would be graduate transfers at that time. I think they stay this year. This is a complete guess.

It seems like Fishback would be a good fit at 184. I think Shumate showed a lot of promise and had some gutty wins particularly at the end of the season at 197. Goeg seemed like a top 15ish type of guy but has battled injuries. Rogo has shown promise but been inconsistent. I think he looked like he was cutting hard to make 184. Maybe his style plays better at 197? Hopefully hopefully whoever emerges from that group will be a solide AA contender? I think it ends up 184-Fishback 197-Shumate. Redshirt Rogo.

Yeah Shumate had some decent matches against the top level guys, just seemed to have trouble in the third period, but I like Fishback at 184 and let Shumate/Geog figure out 197. At this point in the NIL/transfer portal era, ya got to get on board or tOSU won't be able to compete like in the past. As a fan I don't like it, but you gotta do what you gotta do...

Question - Can some of Shumate's third period issues be traced to his jumping back and forth from 197 to 184 to 197. If he wasn't full sized, that could have an impact. Just a thought.

In Geog, Shumate, Rogotzke you've got 3 guys to fill two spots. All have had good moments but haven't been consistent. Will adding Fishback make this group better? Will he be a clear improvement? How does this move fit into Tom Ryan's philosophy of loyalty to his guys?

Fishback more than likely is the starter at 184. He made the round of 12 last two seasons and that’s about where I would project him again this year. He beat Rotogotzke 7-3 in college and beat Shumate a couple times in high school. He is a slight upgrade but not going to get a ton of points at nationals. He is just not going to be in the top tier of guys. Ferrari, mcenelly, welsh, Ryder, Sinclair, Allred, smith, and Ruth he is behind. Probably would need a perfect draw or injuries to others to reach all American this season.

New projected lineup
125 kilkeary/ mccrone ( Flo has bouzakis here, I’m not buying it)
133 davino
141 mendes
149 stiles
157 paddy( redshirt chittum)
165 cannon ( reported he goes up)
174 kharchla (coming back reported)
184 fishback ( Rotogotzke redshirt)
197 Geog/shumate
285 Feldman

I believe the transfer portal has now closed. This team is clearly behind Iowa and Penn state but probably in the 3-6 range battling with Oklahoma state, Nebraska , nc state and Lehigh. If everyone stays healthy should get a team trophy.

Glad to hear Fishback committed. He shoulda been a Buck from the start. I think he will come in around 6-8 in the pre-season 184 rankings.

Rogotzke 100% needs a redshirt. With 197 clearing out a ton, Geog/Shumate have a chance to crack the top 10 as well.
Some question marks- who emerges at 125? Can they be a top 15 guy? Does Paddy move back down to 157? Who takes the 197 spot?

I think you'll see Cannon at 157 and Paddy at 165. My understanding is that Paddy was asked to move up to make room for Sammy. He didn't have enough time to bulk up, got hurt and wrestled at NCAA's in spite of significant injury. One hopes he'll finally have a season where he's healthy and has a set spot.

A few people who seem to know on bucknuts say that cannon wants to go up and that he is 100 percent going up. A lot can happen between now and then but cannon looked pretty good moving up weight classes and looks to be still growing. Paddy would need to go down if this happens or chittum would be forced to wrestle as Ohio state doesn’t really have other options.

Hank,
I read a letter from Dan Gable to a high school coach. It said the most important thing to remember as a coach is to make sure your guys are healthy at the end of the year. Of all the things he could have said, he hand-wrote that to a coach he didn't know.

I had a kid a few years ago, got hurt in practice, and came to find out he broke his back a year earlier. No one told me, and the kid was pounding the weights and going at it in the room. I was and am still pissed because I had no idea and it had a significant impact on his performance, he tried but was in enormous pain. He had no one looking out for him. I know OSU is looking out for its wrestlers, but let's agree Paddy is a hammer and maybe we limit his full go, rehab old injuries, and the sole purpose of next year is to get him ready for the Big Tens and NCAA tournament. If he goes into those healthy he will make a run.

Agree. His career has been undercut constantly by injuries and staff decisions. He's a good soldier and has always done what's asked. I'd love to see him healthy, settled at a weight class and given an opportunity to wrestle a sensible amount of matches with an emphasis on keeping him healthy.
