Quote from Bill Splete's post:

"Hank,
I read a letter from Dan Gable to a high school coach. It said the most important thing to remember as a coach is to make sure your guys are healthy at the end of the year. Of all the things he could have said, he hand-wrote that to a coach he didn't know.

I had a kid a few years ago, got hurt in practice, and came to find out he broke his back a year earlier. No one told me, and the kid was pounding the weights and going at it in the room. I was and am still pissed because I had no idea and it had a significant impact on his performance, he tried but was in enormous pain. He had no one looking out for him. I know OSU is looking out for its wrestlers, but let's agree Paddy is a hammer and maybe we limit his full go, rehab old injuries, and the sole purpose of next year is to get him ready for the Big Tens and NCAA tournament. If he goes into those healthy he will make a run."

Agree. His career has been undercut constantly by injuries and staff decisions. He's a good soldier and has always done what's asked. I'd love to see him healthy, settled at a weight class and given an opportunity to wrestle a sensible amount of matches with an emphasis on keeping him healthy."

And ditto regarding Kharchla if he comes back.

Yesterday we received a commitment from Jeremy Ginter (Cal Baptist/Toledo Whitmer). Not as big of a transfer as some of the others, but at the very minimum helps rebuild the depth that we lost from some of the others that left. He is a redshirt freshman and I believe he is in the 149/157 range.

Getting your guy to the dance healthy and hungry is the name of the game.

Coaches fail miserably at this because they are emotionally attached to the beliefs that they learned from their experience.

It was heartening for me to see the video segment on the strength and conditioning staff focusing on recovery for Jesse at the end of the season. That's the way it should be. You can burn the candle at both ends for awhile until you can't.

Newsflash, if you don't put as much into your recovery as you do your training; it will catch up to you.

I see this in the fire service as well. Garbage diet, no sleep. What do you thinks going to happen?

When you are talking about the smallest of detail influencing outcomes, you best manage the important variables within your control.

We went through an era of coaching in which coaches just buried you under an immense load of mindless work.

It was influenced by Gable, Schwarzenegger and the bravado of the time.

Having raced bicycles for 50+ years, I can not stress how much I agree with Rex on this. As I got older and older, recovery became even more important. It used to be that I could train "hard" for several days in a row before needing a rest or recovery day. Now it is more like 1 to 1 or maybe 2 to 1 work vs recovery.
I think what is important is to understand what each athlete needs for recovery. It does not always mean doing nothing or taking a day off, but it could.
Going as hard as you can, day after day, is a recipe for going backward.

I have been exercising steadily for the last 6 months and have seen a big increase in my general strength and stamina. At 60, I was fighting constant back pain and often found myself limping when I was on my feet too long. At 62, I am much more active on my feet, sleeping better and my back pain is no longer persistent. Still, I am a slave to my youth mindset that you have to work every single day. I've struggled to give myself days off as I'm fearful that it leads to an abandonment of the routine which has benefitted me. Seeing this video, and reading Rex's post, is a great reminder that it's ok to rest and recharge. I'm trying hard to adjust my thinking. Great discussion.

My dad used to say (when he was in his 90's) that no one tells you about the pain. I have to admit I kinda blew him off on that. Now that I'm in my 70's I am relating.
