"Cliff:
Great point you make about the 1/13 scholarship and the reality of maintaining the quality of recruits. Ryan has done a great job selling the recruits into his plan, but I can speak from a 4Xer being recruited perspective that if that was the case in our family's choice we would not have chosen Ohio State. Getting a wrestler to the point of being a 4X champ cost a huge amount of money and to only gain a 1/13 ride for all of that work and cost expended would seem to be an insult to the hard work the wrestler had done. Kenny chose Ohio State mainly because of Russ Hellickson and Jim Jordan and their offer of a full scholarship, but if the full scholarship had not been offered, many other schools had offered full rides and the choice would have leaned more to one of those schools. Schools like Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma State may be able to do that because of their history, but few others can."

But should that not be what OSU aspires to become? You place Minnesota on your list, but their history constitues the past decade. They are proof that OSU can become THE choice for many kids based on more than just money.

Save the redshirt for injury and don't count Lance out.

John
That is the question of the day is it not. College tuitions almost writing off anyone not in professional wage scale from being able to attend college might be a factor today that was not in Gable's day.
And I should corrrect my math. It would be 13/10 percentage and not the very low 1/13. A roughly 30% less than full ride by ALL members of the team. Just losing one or two blue-chippers wanting full ride or else going elsewhere I think takes the team completly out of the top tier.
Another thing to think about is that this top 3 recruit from all over the nation. Is there enough Ohio State lovers to make up the recruiting power of the top 3 nationwide reach.
But yes John I am sure the branding marketing label of top three is the goal of Ohio State. Can they do it with your plan John just might be a necessary thing to find out unless this '08 team can get it done this year.

Financial aid is available in the form of government grants and loans. Students fill out a FAFSA form and learn how much aid is available to them based on family income. In addition to this some community college offer excellent education at a low price. ANYONE who wants to attend college and can cut it academically, has the opportunity if they take the necessary steps.

John:
I am talking about the last 20 years and I believe that if you took the NCAA placings during that period you will find that Minnesota would be in the top three for average finish.

Mr. Cahill... I thought you'd like some more Metcalf "spin".

How much credit should be given for majoring a returning NCAA runner-up and pinning (while dominating) a Junior World Champion (who shut Palmer down last week)? Who's spinning who? Also, was Palmer sick for the Penn State match too?

COMPLETE disconnect from the above comment (and quite possibly the thread)... but I checked the Metcalf/Lang match... What is Lang trying to do at 5:04 of the match and 5:22 of the match??? Seriously.

Mr. Ramsey,
Thank you for the information regarding the last 20 years, but I think it also helps make my point. Minnesota has done great over the last 20 years, but it was the first decade of improvement that made the following decade a desired destination.
When I was in high school (I am a year ahead of your son and had the "pleasure" of wrestling him twice in 2 days at the CIT in 86), the big colleges that were talked about were Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa and Iowa State. While I was not at the caliber to be an elite wrestler, I still followed the sport in both HS and college.
I guess what I am getting at, is that Russ did a pretty good job with the program by building enough of a history. Now, Tom Ryan can improve upon that by taking OSU to the point where it is a desired destination. Also, he has a considerable weapon in the overall excellence of the sports teams at OSU to help instill school spirit.

Agreed. I thought he appeared to be controlling the match, at least compared to others who have wrestled Metcalf recently. He certainly wasn't going to outmuscle him with those throws. I suppose given his history of taking chances and funking out of problems he thought he might catch him. So did Esposito against Schlatter in bout 2.
Now Metcalf's shot at 8:00 was thing of beauty.

Does Metcalf have the most relentless and disconcerting head attack in wrestling in years? Did it to Palmer and did it to Lang. He is incredible to watch.
