Discussion Topic: Senior Commitments?

Quote from Gary Sommers's post:

"To me Tressel lost all integrity..."

Though I couldn't disagree with you more, everyone has a right to speak their own mind.

Jim Tressel is one of the most stand-up guys in college sports. Also, a high school kid rethinking his college choice - for a good reason - is nothing to be looked upon negatively.

Just my $0.02...

Why doesn't that surprise me?

He absolutely sold his soul to Mo for a national title, though a questionable one at that. And Robert Reynolds was clearly on film choking a player. How did he remain on the team?

In this case, what was the "good reason"? Sure there can be some, coaching changes being one, but what was it in this case? And how would the family feel if the coach changed his mind?

You mean the same Clarett that finished high school early so he could join the team for spring ball? What coach would want a player who does that?

As for Reynolds, yes what he did was wrong. However, why should you decide what should happen to him? Should it not be up to the coach what happens? Should every player be kicked off of a team when they do something wrong? Why is it different than the classless Mike Hart denigrating the competition? How did Hart reflect on UM?

I get it. You know everything that goes into these situations. Situations regarding a high school kid in St. Paris or an ex-player from Columbus. You know all the circumstancial evidence. You know everything that goes into making these decisions. You know how to make Zac's life decisions better than the Thomusseit family and you know how to discipline a football team better than Jim Tressel. Of course you do... because you know all the facts... and you have that impeccable integrity.

It shouldn't surprise you.

What about Marlin Jackson smashing a beer bottle on someone's head? ... Wow, a one game suspension.

"Denigration" equals Choking?????? <smile> <rolleyes> <smile>

Yea, what coach wouldn't want a kid who attended 3 high schools in 3 1/2 years? What coach wouldn't want a kid who not only had improper stereo equipment in the trunk of his improper car, but was dumb enough to try and claim it on an insurance report? What coach wouldn't want a player who, after being busted doing a number of stupid/illegal things, then decides to bash the coach and the university?

And sure it should be up to the coach, just too bad that coach did such a lame job of dealing with it. After all, choking is such a minor infraction.

I know there are only a few reasons in that situation to break your word. Did the coach who recruited him leave? Did his family endure unexpected financial hardship? Did he just change his mind?

EVERYONE knows Clarrett's situation? Everyone knows Reynolds choked a player.

And yes, I do know how to discipline a team better than Tressel. So do about 100 other people I know. I would rather have my son play for Bob Knight than Jim Tressel.

Sadly, it has turned into OSU homerism. If everything that Clarrett, Reynolds, and Tressel has done was done in Ann Arbor, you would be tearing them a new one.

And I don't mean to just pick on one kid. Unfortunately, integrity has gone bye-bye in today's society. Your word is your word, unless the other party reneges first. Is that what happened here?

Gary,

In one of you earlier comments you alluded to the fact that you have had OSU grads work for you. From that comment, I can assume that you have had (or still have) hiring authority for your company.

You've no doubt been in a situation where you interviewed a candidate several times, did a thorough investigation of his/her background and credentials and eventually offered them a job which they accepted.

Did you have a track record of 100% success with these hiring decisions? Was there ever a situation when a candidate just turned out to be a lousy employee, despite your best efforts during the hiring process?

Why aren't coaches allowed to make an occasional "bad hire"... this is how I would characterize Maurice Clarrett. I could name several "bad hires" that UofM coaches have made over the years too.

As for a man's word meaning something... I seem to recall a story about Woody Hayes telling Bo Schembechler that when he retired, Bo would the next head coach at OSU. Bo accepted graciously, then broke his commitment several years later to coach UofM... I guess by your standards, Bo had no integrity either....

And here I thought that I was going to read three pages of inside info on where some of Ohio's unsigned seniors were headed. This turned into another example of why I don't like football much anymore. <crazy>

Plus, with gas prices today, I don't even have the $0.02 that Dan has.

So, have anymore kids decided where they think that they may go to college and continue their wrestling careers?

Yes Pryor signing today is a huge gain for the Buckeyes. The future is bright on the gridiron and on the mat.
