Quote from Don Bork's post:

"Scott, I agree with your assessment of the top half of the lineup. However, at the beginning of last season Ryan opted for Jordan at 174 over Romero. I understand that Rocky did win their wrestle off, but it was obvious after a few matches that Kaleb was wrestling at a higher level. I Don’t think it’s a secret that Coach REALLY wants Jordan in the lineup. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Fact is they are all on the eligibility clock, so I would expect to see them all over the course of the season. Of course there will be the odd man out come tournament time."

Rocky Jordan is a great wrestler, and certainly better than I or most of the people people on this board could ever hope to be. That said I think he is the guy that gets pushed out of the lineup in either scenario. The wrestle off last year was a joke and everyone there including several Graham people who I talked to knew it. Rocky should have been hit for stalling 2-3 more times easy. Early season results supported this which is why Kaleb ended up the guy (prior to last season I favored Rocky). Rocky looked a lot better at 184 than 174 but still did not wrestle with the same urgency in my opinion as the other 2 (Smith and Romero). Smith has a lot of losses but all were to elite guys. He also had some good wins, most notably McFadden. Rocky did have the signature win against Venz but got handled by most top guys including Venz later in the season. I always assumed Karchla would be at 165 and with Romero looking like a top four guy at 174 but I keep hearing that he may be too big for the weight. You can also consider that 165 returns Lewis, Marinelli, and Wick so 174 may give Karchla a better opportunity to contend for a title immediately.

The combination of quality depth, a missed postseason and off season competition to serve as barometers, and hair thin head to head matchups make any speculation on the lineup incredibly difficult. There are questions from 157 and below, but the strength of this team will come from 165 and up. Will we even have.a wrestling season to watch this play out? Will the sport go to one semester? Will there be any opens or multi day tournaments?
Back to the minute...of all the guys discussed 165-285 Romero was the highest ranked with the best track record of consistency. Add to that 174 (outside of 197) lacks the overall depth that weights like 184 and 165 have. I think Kaleb can emerge as a high podium threat (potentially top three or four). I don’t see Smith or Rocky as guys that can crack that top eight list without some help from the draw at any of the weights (unless there is some jump in ability this next season).
Singletary wrestled 220 his senior year of high school. He made 97kg (213) last fall, and hasn’t had any competition since CKLV last November. Can he make 197 consistently, and be competitive? Going down in weight isn’t always better. You gain a size advantage, but guys are faster and more athletic typically. I’m not surprised if Hoffman is the starter as the year progresses. Replacing Kollin was exactly why he was recruited. If Hoffman doesn’t start this year I think he ends up somewhere else down the road. Probably a make or break year for him.
Karchla had perhaps one of the best senior runs of any kid to come out of high school in the last couple of years. I say that because he was a relative unknown nationally until his junior year. Add in the wrestle off victory, some solid wins at two weights last year, and an undefeated RS campaign (albeit limited) and there is cause for excitement. Are we selling Ethan Smith a little short here? The guy has some great wins and has been a national qualifier and in striking distance of AA ranking. Karchla does concern me a little with durability. I thought I remembered him being banged up on and off early on in high school, and obviously he had his injury last year as well. Super high upside though!

Quote from Jason L. Jackson's post:

"On another message board a person who was in on a donor conference call said that Coach Ryan told them Kharchla was wrestling off Smith at 165 with the loser wrestling off Romero at 174. If that's true, I see this year's lineup as follows:

125 - Malik
133 - Decatur or transfer
141 - Echemendia
149 - Sasso
157 - Wilcox or Kinner
165 - Kharchla
174 - Romero
184 - Rocky (Does Smith dare to go all the way back up to the weight he started at?)

this is exactly how I see it as well
197 - Singletary
285 - Orndorff

I see 10 qualifiers and 5-6 potential AAs."

I was watching the video of Sasso & Echemendia drilling on twitter and thought what an awesome situation, if Sammy can learn more offense from Echemendia and Anthony could improve on his mat wrestling with Sammy showing him some stuff. That is going to be one heck of a one-two punch in the lineup.

A lot of talk on national forums about Echemendia making the transition from freestyle to folk and particularly bottom wrestling. It's somewhat valid as a lot of guys struggle to adjust to mat wrestling on the D1 college level. Anthony will have Sasso and Kinner who are both very good mat wrestlers and good scramblers. Logan Stieber is also obviously still around and involved with the program and he was a pretty solid mat wrestler as well from what I hear.
