NCAA gambling restrictions aren't in place to protect the athletes, they're there to protect the sportsbooks. Any perceived lack of "integrity" in the competition is a major threat to betting markets as a whole and opens them up to potential litigation.
Any athlete that loses their savings trading options, or wrapped up in some crypto or MLM scam is prone to the exact same temptations to shave points as someone that's down on their sports bets. The idea of the bookie with mob ties getting an athlete in a hole and using them to influence outcomes is largely outdated, IMO.

I agree with Brian and Bill -- but these guys knew the rules and broke them, know the punishment if caught. They got caught. Can't pick the consequence now.

I agree the restrictions aren't there to protect the athlete, but I disagree that they are there to protect sportsbooks. That may be a result of the restrictions, but the restrictions are there to protect the game.
The idea that a bookie would force an athlete to influence a game might be outdated, but the idea that an athlete would feel desperate enough to influence a game get out of the hole or score big certainly isn't. If you don't think so, please talk to someone who's addicted to it.
