Discussion Topic: Tom Ryan named RevWrestling's "Coach of the Year"

Key aspects to Phillips' continued evolution:
1. Environment
2. Guidance
3. Workout partners
4. Health

The “Russians” had a system that produced so many great wrestlers.

Identify the talent, get them a coach who oversees development, pair them up with other great wrestlers and limit outside influences.

The U.S. wrestlers have more choices and personal freedom. Our system does not churn out numbers like the counterpart. We have folkstyle college wrestling that will take its toll on an athlete. Once you graduate college, you are 22-23 years old and there may be some pressure to get a real job and “grow up.” Wrestling Olympic style year round and getting the necessary competitions as well as proper feedback is not always forthcoming.

Every so often, there comes a long a John Smith or Cael Sanderson who are truly special. You realize that once you contemplate what they were able to do.

I read a quote that pertains to outstanding careers, “ In order for everything to go right, you have to navigate everything that can go wrong.”

Phillips has the talent. It would be nice to see him develop it while wearing Scarlet and Grey. Mike Pucillo would be an outstanding mentor to help him bridge the gap.

well said Rex--- btw, i don't know if you remember about 4 years ago at the Cleveland St Open, you showed up, gave it a go and edged a tall rangy freshman from Penn St. That was this years NCAA champion at 197 lb, Phil Davis. He also became a 4X Div I All-American which i believe is statistically harder to do than win an NCAA title.

Chris Phillips is known to work out at Erik Burnett's All American Wrestling Club, known as "The Barn" in these parts. I am sure he has plenty of guidance from one of the great talent developers in Ohio right now. As far as workout partners, it would be tough to find somebody to give him a challenge. I know he used to workout out with Magrum and Kilgore. Whether or not that will change with those two in college is yet to be seen, but if that situation continues, it will make Phillips all the better.

Hey, I know who could be a great workout partner for Chris Phillips... Tommy Rowlands. Now if there was just a setting for such a thing to take place...

Bob:

I remember. He is a stud. I remember taking down in the second period thinking I would escape easily. Two minutes later and the match was still 0-0.

Afterward, I remember sitting next to him and telling him he was a stud and should win an NCAA title.

Guys like Phillips, Stiebers, Taylor, etc. ... I can't see hardly any program not wanting them but I also don't see them going anywhere outside the Big 10 or Big 12 where you have the best coaching/workout partners. The only exception to this would be if they went the Henry Cejudo or Harry Lester route.

Kusar just signed with Ohio State. I think plenty more to come in the next week, too.

Quit being a tease, Bob. At least give us a hint. I speculated some on another thread but I'll try again.
Dave Rella - HS teammate of Mike Pucillo. NQ at 165 for Penn State. With Erwin at 174 and Quentin Wright coming in prejecting at 165/174 could Rella be moving up and moving on? This would be a great pickup but Bob said the transfer would have immediate eligibility and I think Rella would have to sit a year.

Rocky Cozart - I don't even know if Cozart is still at MSU but I know he has had his problems there. Cozart was a stud recruit coming out of hs but has tons of baggage. He fits the recent tOSU mode of likely Greco guys (Bergman, Triggas, Weakley). Same eligibility issue as Rella.

Thoughts, anyone?

In reading on TheMat that Caldwell is leaving North Carolina State, one poster stated that his choices were Rutgers, Nebraska, and the Buckeyes. Another opined that it was a done deal for Rutgers. IF he came to OSU, does anyone know if he, Nemec and Sponseller are big enough to go 157-174, respectfully?

Bob suggested more than one wrestler to commit to OSU in the next week with at least one helping at 174. Would this scenario provide the 174 help?

I like the thought of Rella coming back.

Scott:
It's Cozart, and he is a great kid from an outstanding wrestling family. Would be a super pickup for Buckeyes, but I don't see it happening.

Ken - didn't Cozart have repeated discipline problems in HS and at MSU? No doubt a great talent, but also would represent a risk as someone who could come in and disrupt what is a very positive, team-oriented environment.

That said, I'm sure you know his situation much better than I. Are his rumored attitude problems overblown?

Bob, might you have any information on the wrestlers that were just brought in? Ethan Moore posted on this forum about a link to someone on themat.com about 3 signees that I haven't heard about, is this a legitimate group of signings or is this a fake?

i never heard of those 3 "signees" -- if not "fake" then i would say those 3 are "obscure" to say the least..

but i know the Buckeyes expect still more quality signees/and/or transfers yet this Spring.
