Discussion Topic: Will the Monroeville 4 be the next 4x State Champs?
Dan Cosimi added to this discussion on March 12, 2008

A few comments about what has been said...

- There is a world of difference between winning the NCAA tournament and an Ohio high school state title.

- Nobody is saying they'll go undefeated. It is more likely that if one or more of them lose, it will be at the Ironman. Most of the teams in the Ironman are not in Ohio or in D3, though.

- Harry Lester is not a good example to use. Why? Because he had another option within the sport. There is no other option in high school.

- Most of the Ohio three-timers were not ranked #1 in the nation. Logan Stieber, Hunter Stieber, and Chris Phillips either are currently #1 or are very close and will be for sure after this senior class graduates (in Phillips' case). This year's three-timers - Ryan Gambill, Ben Jordan, and Cody Magrum - were never ranked that high nationally.

Sure, it can happen that one or more of the Monroeville 4 lose at the state tournament in one of the next three years, but I doubt it very much.

as long as Monroeville goes to the Ironman, and to Brecksville Holiday tourn too, every year then the odds of being undefeated diminish.

Logan Stieber's one loss so far is in the Ironman, matter of fact, to David Taylor in 2006.

Scott: wasn't Heskett's victory over Cael at Fargo or Nationals? I thought Cael only had one collegiate loss (to Jenn?).

Cael no losses of course in his 4 years of varsity at Iowa st U, but yes i heard he lost in an open tourn his redshirt year, maybe more than once i don't know?.

Heskett's win over Cael occured in the QUARTERFINALS of the first Reno T of C, i was there to see it. Cael leading by a point chose down to begin 3rd period and Heskett tilted him to his back for 2 --and the one point win.

The first Reno T of C was the greatest high school tourn ever, up to that time---- although in recent years i think the Beast of the East equaled it on several occassions, and more recently the IRONMAN equaled it too on several occassions. But Reno was fun, after the wrestling was done--- more fun that Cuyahoga Falls Ohio, ha, ha !!

In Fargo, Heskett won freestyle Jr nationals the summer after his senior year, but Cael was in another wt. Joe btw lost in his pool to Robby Waller , former NCAA champ and current asst at U of Oklahoma. History is fascinating isn't it ?

Cael Sanderson was undefeated at 159-0 during his collegiate career including winning four NCAA Championships and was voted the NCAA's Outstanding Wrestler four times.

Cael did lose one match his redshirt season (but of course that doesn't count on his record) and that was the loss to Iowa's Paul Jenn. Sanderson owned Jenn every other time they wrestled.

Cael of course had some great bouts over the years.
- The Russian Sajid Sajidov was right there with Cael on the international level. Cael won the Olympics while Sajidov was upset earlier in the tournament.
- Former Iowa standout Lee Fullhart and Cael were close in the U.S. qualification matches. Cael won when it counted most, though.
- Minnesota's Damion Hahn gave Cael all he could handle in a match when Hahn was a freshman and Cael was a sophomore. Cael still won.
- I think David Kjeldgaard was the last person to defeat Cael at Fargo.

I think that Phillips stands the best chance of going undefeated out of the bunch. Obviously it is between him and Hunter at this point. I think that Hunter can run into a Taylor or a Clark and could be knocked off.

I do think that Logan will not lose another high school match. He will probably at the time he graduates have the longest winning streak in history of Ohio.

"I do think that Logan will not lose another high school match."

Dan R,
never say never, after all i recall a prominent website mgr/poster on here saying the same thing about Dustin Schlatter after he won NCAAs 2 years ago.

if Monroeville keeps going to Ironman, and i am sure they will, never know who might be in Logan S's weight class, maybe David Taylor again, or some stud from Pa or California, u just never know-- its a big country.
