Heinselman pins the 3 seed and beats the 4 seed, looking good!

Great job by Heinselman. Defense and tilts? Why not. Smart of the coaches to figure out that his all out attacking style made him vulnerable. He did a great job defending and was money on top. I think going bottom with a 5-0 lead and no TD's allowed was questionable but Malik wrestled a smart period on bottom.
Pretty sure he clinched a trip to NCAA's with that win.

You could hear the coaches ask Malik what he wanted. Bottom was his choice, and probably the most risk averse. He has a descent shot to win again. Hopefully he keeps the momentum going.
YaYa Thomas was a world team member at one point. Ignore the 9 seed. That was an under seeded guy based off of minimal matches. I would expect Sam to roll in tonight’s semifinal. I’m sure he’s not super thrilled with how he wrestled. There has to be a little concern about his inability to get to guys legs. The MO looks to be don’t shoot and reattack off of his straight ahead style. That could be a bad recipe. Good thing Sammy’s a brawler, and can wrestle to victory when the match gets murky.
BTW. Is it me or does Illinois look like the drill hopping over (cartwheeling) from the bottom position. I’ve never seen so many guys try that from the bottom. I used to get yelled at for doing that.

YaYa is losing to Parriott, proving the Big10 is one hell of a tournament.

But YaYa wrestled the edge and was defensive, same as with Sammy, but Parriott got to his legs a few times and that was the difference. YaYa's style reminds me of Cleary.

Strong showing in the consi's so far except for Cleary losing. Heinsel wins and Rocky and Kaleb getting MD's.

Great evening for the Bucks. Malik had his match in hand until giving up a late takedown and backs. He looked good though. Cleary had a tough loss where he looked really gassed. Everyone else looked great. The guys in the consi semis have some winnable matches. Same for the guys in the finals. Would be awesome to see them finish second in the conference.

I really feel bad for Malik, the kid just tries so hard the entire match but just can't seem to catch a break. He wrestles for 7th place tomorrow. I'm not giving up on him yet. I want him to put on some muscle and see if he can improve next year. I think that is part of his problem on bottom, he isn't strong enough to break the grip most guys use on his wrists, arms & legs.

He hd the Hoosier up in the air on a shot and didn’t finish. If he does, he wins the match. That had nothing to do with strength. Malik has all the tools to be great - need to enhance them with added size and some “nasty”.

Heading in to day two I think Iowa has distanced itself enough, and has enough juice in the consis, to pull away from the field for the title. Nebraska has wrestled really well, and has and will push through all ten guys. They will not score as well in two weeks because I do not think they will push anyone through to the finals. They are absolutely a trophy contender, but PSU and perhaps the Bucks will blow right by them with finalist points. To me, Purdue has to be the big story. With two finalist and eight potential qualifiers they have emerged to out on a very impressive team performance.
As far as the Bucks are concerned I feel like they are wrestling good, but not great (which bodes well for two weeks from now). I say that for a couple of reasons.
1. Although Pletcher is in the finals, and majored McKee again I don’t think Luke has looked as explosive or dominant as he has throughout the season.
2. Sammy Sasso has reached the finals and has not registered a takedown during the tournament. Think about that... I’m not confident he will beat Lugo in the finals even though he owns two wins against him. I hope I’m wrong.
3. Outside of Malik, no one else has pulled any real upsets by defeating guys seeded above them. All four of the guys in the consi semis have an opportunity to beat someone they’re not expected to. Ethan Smith is seeded higher than Oster but lost to him in the dual. I think he gets it done here and wrestles for 3rd. Although Romero and Rocky own wins over their opponents next round the matches could easily go the other way. Optimistically, if the Bucks put three out of four in for third it might give Ohio State enough of a shot to finish ahead of Penn State.

Heinselman had a good Big Tens. He has wrestled smarter, used better strategies and that has paid off. He was within 15 seconds of beating Liam Cronin in addition to wins over McKee and Cardani. Three wins at the BT's and a 7th place finish is significantly above his seed.
Romero over Skatzka and Smith over Oster were also nice wins.
Minny and Wiscy have not had good Big Tens while Purdue has surged. Injuries may be a big reason.
Bucks are going to struggle for victories from this point forward. Only Moore will be favored.

Nice win for Luke, thought for sure they were going to call that second stall when Luke was in defense mode at the end of the match. Five more seconds and Sammy wins, but that's OK, good match, see ya in a couple weeks. Keep doing what you are doing! That kid can ride when he has to.

If the danger count is 3, Sammy should have won. If that's reviewable, it's easy, look at the clock when Lugo gets into danger, and see if it's at 3 or greater (hint: it was).
Lugo never came out of the danger position. Oh well, hopefully Sammy learns that he has to initiate some offense earlier in the match.

Oh, BTW, tOSU finished third ahead of PSU, who would have thought? Nebraska was second with one second place finisher & five third placers.

I thought when Lugo let his grip on the leg go that would have given control to Sammy, but they didn't call it. But better to have it happen now and not at Nationals. Maybe he follows in J Jaggers footsteps, never a Big Ten Champ, but a two-time NCAA Champ.
