Short answer, Iowa State.

Then and now are two very different scenarios.

Penn State has an additional member, Bonnie Epstein. She has been with the group during Caels Olympic run, then Iowa State, and now Penn State. She is the mentalist of the organization, and she plays a big role.
my point is Don Moxley was doing some research on breathing and optimum focus a few years ago with the OSU wrestling team. It was part of a military study that used wrestlers that compete in very intense sports and how they achieve calm in the chaos and reach a heightened level of awareness without anxiety and how that would help the military in active duty. They measured the wrestlers breathing before practice, after then at home to measure their heart rate and breathing during normal circumstances, then while practicing and competition. Side note Snyder was the most chill person regardless of what he was doing or competing in.
My question is, what happened to that study, and does OSU have a Bonnie Epstein type person that works beyond the mat for the athletes. I am told now, they do not. Look at every program in the country, and it is rare dare I say no one has a Bonnie Epstein that serves the wrestling program specifically.
I believe wrestling isn't just about tech and conditioning and the most successful program is combining a mind and body program to maximize performance. If all things are even and they have a person that helps bring success into focus, we might want to look into this... it's cultural and they all buy into it...

Not to be trite, but Bonnie Epstein isn’t solving our problems on bottom.

I am confident that some of the best sports performance people work for The Ohio State University athletic department.

If they aren’t actually working with the wrestling team it is TR’s fault. But I bet they are.

not in my view. doesn't really matter, both arguments are hypothetical and we'll never know.

True - both hypothetical - but fun to discuss.

I see Cael now like Belichick. Both were good coaches at first stop but both reached completely different levels where they currently are — and both had all time greats to get them (or they, the coaches, helped them) get there. Athletes buy in even more when they see the greatest buying in.

I love the NC States, Cornell, ASU, etc climbing because the more great teams there are, the more exciting it is for us college fans.

Though the rise of other schools distances us even more from PSU.

Belichick is a good analogy, but where Belichick's success was tied to one player, Sanderson is on his third generation of athletes now, with that staff being the only constant. I was reading through some old topics the other day and many were saying how Penn State would struggle when Taylor and Ruth graduated, that any coach would be successful with those kinds of horses in the stable, and that "we'd see what kind of coach Sanderson was with this next group". Well, that next group was Rutherford, Joseph, Nolf and Nickal.

Now he's doing it again with RBY, Lee, Starocci and Brooks. Wait and see what Kerkvliet looks like in a year or two.

I agree Michael - but if Sanderson could have Taylor / Ruth for 20 years he would have. :)

Someone mentioned the rise at other schools. I hated seeing Sammy lose in the NCAA finals but it's very cool that there's a huge sign on the UNC campus congratulating Austin O'Connor on winning an NCAA title. Clearly, it means a lot to the Athletic Department and administration.

Of all the finals matches, I thought Austin O'Connor's win was the best example of coaching and preparation. That staff did a great job scouting and game planning for Sasso...and O'Connor was incredibly disciplined in executing that plan.

Starocci reversing a convincing 7-2 defeat was impressive as well.

O'Connor was itching to shoot but held off. Agree--excellent coaching and execution.

Sammy is not a good shooter but if he can get a leg, his finishing techique is outstanding. Bucks staff needs to devise strategies for him to get in on shots.

My oldest son is currently on Spring Break, so I was out of town most most of the week and am now catching up on the wrestling world just in time for the start of Olympic Team Trials. Apparently a lot has happened in the past week, and many are not great signs for the Ohio RTC, but I just wanted to share a brief story.

Back in January I was fortunate enough to get invited to watch some of the Men's Freestyle camp at SPIRE in Geneva, OH. At the end of one of the practices, Coach Kevin Jackson encouraged the wrestlers to thank the supporters that were in attendance. Now, Coach Joe Russell had said beforehand that they were trying to maintain their team bubble and that we'd have to watch from a distance, so I wasn't expecting any of the wrestlers to go out of their way to do this, but every single current or former Ohio RTC wrestler that was in attendance (McKenna, Martin, Moore, and Cox) came up, shook hands, and thanked everyone.

None of the other wrestlers at the camp did this - and I don't fault them for not doing so during a pandemic - but it wasn't lost on me which wrestlers did do it. The character Coach Ryan instills in these guys may not win them World and Olympic titles, but its benefits off the mat are invaluable.

Thank for sharing, Jeff! Coach Ryan definitely attracts and nurtures people of high character. I've had many similar experiences when I've attended OSU/ORTC events or just stopped by to watch practice!
