I guess I’m missing something here with Mendez. Tie match 2+ ridding time and he gave up a Td in 2nd. So why not take down even if kid is tough on top? He lost Td battle 2-1. He would’ve needed a TD to win and he didn’t get in OT so what makes you think he gets it in 3rd?

. So why not take down even if kid is tough on top?
Please see Nagao quarters match and the 3rd period and OT of Mendez match for your answer.

Yeah he took Byrd down twice just like he took down Mendez.
We can agree to disagree.

Paddy doesn't have the same aptitude at improv and scrambling as some of his peers. Therefore, he needs to only wrestle from the framework which allows him to compete on his terms.
Therein lies the path and answer to what Paddy has to do in order to beat those top guys. Limit the grey area wrestling and don't allow some positions to transpire.

As I watched the Model match I couldn't help but think of what Rex said, especially in the scrambles.

Paddy loses to Model and Hoffman medically forfeits out. Paddy takes 11th by way of medical forfeit from Dr. Carr. The Big 10 has 10 allocations at 157 and 9 at 197. Both guys are on the fringe, but based on body of work I would think they get in.
Great consolation semi final round for the Bucks. Mendez loses a tight one to Cannon that was within his sights. He needs to finish on a high note with a win over Ragusin. This weight is brutal at 133.
D'Emilio, Kharchla, and Orndorf did themselves some real favors this weekend. How about Orndorf knocking off Hilger. I believe he was 0 for the century against the Badger.
The Bucks have already tied their point total from 2022 (91.5), and surpassed their 2021 total (69.5). They put up 112 in 2020, and 122.5 in a 2019 runner up finish. It's unlikely that they catch anyone in front of them today.

why are they wrestling for 11th place at 157 when there are only 10 auto spots?

I don't know. Maybe to determine an alternate? First one in kind of thing.

I am not saying Gallagher is not good enough, but should a guy who can't place in the top 10 in his conference tournament really get a WC? Give the dudes from the Mid Majors a chance at nationals.

A couple comments...
First kudos to Ethan Smith for wrestling an outstanding BT tourney. He looked like crap at times early in the season but rounded into form as the year wore on. And this weekend he was sharp. Edmond Ruth and Bailee OReilly are tough and he beat them back to back for 3rd. His top wrestling was improved as was his late match conditioning. Clearly he has put in the effort to make a run in a few weeks.
And congrats to the Slam Man on another BT title. Blockhus looked like a brand new wrestler this weekend. Sammy stayed patient, wrestled with great intensity, and pulled out an OT win in the finals. His greatness is easy to overlook but I am grateful to get the chance to watch him. Nothing would make me happier than to see him in the finals in a few weeks. Best of luck to him

Mendez 2 - finished 6 -4
Dylan 9 - finished 4 +5
Sasso 1 finished 1
Gallagher 12 finished 13 I think
Carson 5 finished 3 +2
Smith 3 finished 3
Romero 2 finished 2
Hoffman 7 finished DNP
Tate 7 finished 4 +3
Over all Bucks wrestled better than expected in most weights. Mendez looks like he hit freshman wall a little bit.
Healthy Malik and i think Bucks finish 3rd.

Overall I am happy with the Buckeyes performance. They have Heinselman, they finish 3rd as a team.
A few things that stodd out:
Paddy- Ugh
Kharchla vs. Hamiti in the semi's yokes, but man I am all up for a Hamiti vs. Carr NCAA finals the way they both look.
D'Emilio- a couple very good wins
Tate- 5th place was huge for the team, I hope he carries this momentum over.
Hoffman tough draw, Allred is the real deal
There's alot more but I am content with the performance. Some really good finals matches too yesterday. Can't for for 2 weeks.

Paddy’s a redshirt frosh and we’re throwing him under the bus already? He has had some very good showings and some clunkers. Certainly this was a terrible first Big Ten tournament.
I’m willing to give him some time to make corrections. When he’s good, he looks great. He is getting in on his shots but not finishing. That is correctable. As pointed out before, he has trouble with length; that is also correctable.
If he does the same thing next year, then we have a miss.
I’m in the camp of letting Mendez go down in the semis. He hasn’t been ridden this year. Now they know at the big show not to do that. Lesson learned, I hope. Even Logan had to learn that lesson against Zain.
I’m not sure I have seen an elite wrestler so mediocre on his feet as the Savage. But on the mat, few better. I’ve stopped sweating his third periods because he is going to win. I think of Rex’s comments about position: Sammy doesn’t risk much on his feet and puts you in spots he wants to be.
