Discussion Topic: is this still true ?
David Brown added to this discussion on July 29, 2020

It is a fascinating discussion. The Founders created the possibility of equal opportunity. Since then we have been working toward equal outcomes. This has proven to be far trickier. Equal outcomes usually involves some societal tinkering. How do we achieve equal outcomes between all the races when so many factors influence outcomes?

All of the variations Mr. Stann listed that still exist between whites and blacks could also be said to exist between whites and Asian Americans. Why the disparity? I work with federal parolees in my evening gig. Where are the Asian Americans in our criminal justice system? Why are whites far more likely to drop out of school than Asian Americans? Why do Ivy League schools have to stack the deck against Asians to keep their campuses from being nearly all Asian? Does the system favor Asians or is it cultural, genetic?

Mr. Rodriguez mentioned a little about his upbringing. Why are Cuban Americans far more likely to achieve wealth than Mexican Americans? Is it systemic or cultural or something else? Is is OK if different cultures have different values? When we find any differences between races why are we surprised? When we find different outcomes between races and cultures why do we immediately assume racism?

As a white American I assume Asian Americans are rarely arrested, achieve more academically and have higher incomes not because the system somehow favors them. I assume it is because they have different values than me. And those values are not necessarily better or worse. Just different.

I work in Detroit. The Vietnamese community there and the various Arab American communities amaze me. Culture and family values help them create wealth out of almost nothing. Racism is one of dozens of factors but it is often our reflex explanation.

BobP...Your responses to both me and Mike Stann were perfect.
