Future Buckeyes
127 #6 Vinny Kilkeray vs #4 Brandon Davies (PSU commit)
172 #1 Rocco Welsh vs #2 182 Barr (PSU Commit)"

Kilkeray won 5-2 and you can hear the whining from PSU fans on Vinny supposedly getting away with illegal move which lead to TD + NF.
Welsh won 3-1 in OT in a pretty boring match and of course PSU fans think that result will flip in college but you can be assured if he Barr won then PSU fans would claim Barr would win by larger margin next year. So predictable.

Didn't Ethan Birden and Brock Herman both win state as well?"
|
Herman beat two time champ and Penn commit Ty Wilson in OT during the semis. One heck of a win. He then closed out for the title. Birden has another year left

Herman is very talented but has to learn to use both arms when finishing shots. He also got ridden out by Wilson in their match so he needs bottom work. In other words, he's a perfect Buckeye ;)

Shawn,
Would you mind describing how the Ohio team was chosen?

Brady, started by looking at top returners (State Placement) across divisions, looked for head to head results at tournaments like Ironman, Brecksville etc. In a perfect world with plenty of time we would have waited until after the state tournament.
Coaches had a running list of top choice, 2nd etc I reached out to wrestlers coaches to get athlete contact information. If a wrestler accepted they were on team, if they declined we went to the next person on the list.
Some weight classes the first person asked accepted and that was it, for others we had to continue to reach out. Most was done prior to sectional, after the state tournament we confirmed with prior commitments and made adjustments based on anyone who was no longer able to participate. (Injury, schedule, desire etc)

Thanks. I know there are always questions of "why did they pick "wrestler x" over "wrestler y" because y did better than x at state" in any post-season All-Star event. So it's nice to hear from one who was involved in the process.

I would have to imagine that Decatur entering the portal means that either D'Emilio or Mendes are planning on wrestling 141 next year.

I’m a little surprised it took this long. He has likely completed his degree. Additionally, he has won each of the last two wrestle offs but barely wrestled any meaningful amount of matches as the starter. I’m not sure anyone that has been watching the program the last four years considered him a viable option to start. Great young man. I hope he lands somewhere that he can contribute and be successful.

They gave him a couple chances but you got the sense the staff trusted D'Emilio more. Agree that I'm surprised he's waited this long. I'd love to see him at a Cleve State or an Ohio U. Good luck to him.
