These are my thoughts from this past weekend:

125: Spencer Lee should get the Hodge trophy. He only had one match which wasn't bonus points, whereas Gable had two. And he's more humble than Gable, IMO.

133: RBY executed well and earned himself the right to compete in the Olympic Trials. It sounded like he's on the fence since he's between weights, but those kind of opportunities don't come often, so for his sake I hope he goes for it.

141: I wanted Lee to win mainly because I still feel bad for Mizzou losing Eierman. Although losing Eierman meant that Allan Hart got to make a big impact in Mizzou's lineup.

149: I'm really bummed that Sasso lost, but at least he has more years to do it. I think if he had been able to find a way to keep moving in that sorta cradle position rather than get a stalemate, he could have ridden out the whole second period. That could have made the difference. And don't even get me started on the Heil-Lewallen thing.

157: Since we can count Carr as an Ohioan, I was happy to see him win. He has so much potential in folkstyle and freestyle.

165: I agree with what everyone said about Ethan Smith's semi, so I won't spend any more time on that. I was glad to see Shane Griffith win. I'm disgusted by the fact that Stanford didn't even acknowledge his victory. Serves the university right that the team wore plain black without the logo since the school won't support them. I hope Griffith lands on his feet somewhere and gets another title or two.

174: Really bummed for Romero. Brutal draw in the consis. Hope he bounces back and gets it done next year.

184: The stalling call against Hidlay and the non-call against Brooks are puzzling to me (as well as some of the other calls throughout the weekend). There has to be some sort of way to penalize guys that purposefully put a part of their body on the hard floor to get an out of bounds call. That might cause more issues with it being a judgement call, but most observers can tell the difference between simply sprawling and your foot touches the floor, versus reaching for the floor and then looking directly at the ref to see him confirm the out of bounds call.

197: Ferrari is super talented, but some of his antics are irritating. When he pretended to toss his headgear after his semis match, the look on Coach Smith's face was not lost on me when he snatched it from Ferrari's hand. I hope Amos comes out of redshirt and beats him next year.

285: Similar to Ferrari, Gable is super talented whether you love him or hate him. He is way bigger and stronger than he was his first two years, yet he managed to do a backflip after his match. Unbelievable.

General:
-Really wish I could've been in St. Louis this year. Instead I was watching from my buddy's bar that he owns. They support wrestling, and there were a lot of former wrestlers there, but I came home smelling like an ashtray each night (they recently started "allowing" smoking because it's a hole in the wall joint and most of their regulars smoke...). Gross. If anyone knows of bars or restaurants in Northeast Ohio that are supporters of wrestling and don't just play basketball this time of year, please let me know.

Semi-serious question:

For those of you that coach or have coached, how do you keep your heart rate under control during a nail-biter match? I'm young and in relatively good shape, but there definitely are times where I've been coaching Akron in tight matches at Nationals and my heart's beating at the same rate as the guys on the mat. Not sure if I should be worried or not.

It happens to me sometimes even when I'm just spectating Big Tens or NCAAs if it's a match I'm invested in.

Quote from Jared Ball's post:

"Although I’m now reverting to the seasonal post NCAA tourney blues I can’t tell you how great it was to know that we had a tourney this year. Even without fans, the tournament was electric. The semis, blood round, and finals never seem to disappoint.
Admittedly I’d be feeling even better if Sammy would’ve been standing on top of the podium. Upon reflection I had a few takeaways from the three great days of wrestling.

-My disdain for the merkle position as a takedown and control position continues to grow. First Tomasello against Clark and now Sammy. It’s the rule so everyone has equal footing, but you can’t convince me that it’s a position of control that should be awarded with two points. Personally, I think it should be treated like the cradle position. The opponent should be knocked to a hip, or in near fall to be awarded the points.
-Being the number 1 seed isn’t so grand. Only Spencer Lee and Gable Steveson came in as one seeds and left on top of the podium. That seems like an abnormal thing, but then again this was an abnormal season. Probably due in part to the wonky seeds attributed to the schedule.
-It was discussed during the broadcast, but I hope the NCAA continues to allow extra matches in duals, including for redshirts. I think this was an experiment worth keeping. It benefits everyone, and is one step away from modifying the redshirt rule where you get four NCAAs in five years to provide flexibility with injury and redshirting.
-Penn State will own the next four years. Bank it. I’m going to disagree with a tweet Ben Askren put out. This group is better then any of the previous PSU groups. RBY didn’t just beat Fix, he controlled every aspect of the match. Between him, one more year of Nick Lee, Starocci, and the 184 it’s difficult to see that quartet being breached often during the next four years. Add to that Robbie Howard, Michael Beard, and a healthy Kirkvliet making some jumps and they are formidable.
-Iowa is old and beat up. Three torn ACLs in four years is not a good sign for Spencer. Kemerer is one step away from being bionic, and Marinelli just has horrible luck. All these free pass discussions for this year sound like an incredible opportunity, but six and seven years at the division 1 level is not feasible. Even at Happy Happy Valley. Guys breakdown, they get beat up, and they still have the rest of their lives go live. I’m betting an overwhelming majority of the top tier guys do not take advantage of the gifted year. It’s not worth it in the end.
-Lastly, seven championships for Big 10 individuals. The other three went to the Big 12 (2) and the PAC 12 (1). Stanford U can suck it, but it was great to see Cal Poly have a great showing, Utah Valley showed out (you include Orndorf and they had a legit top ten team), Oregon State is improved, and ASU looks like they are on the rise."

Lee, Eierman. Marinelli, and De Santo all say they will be back next year.

For me it was really realizing that I coach better when I’m calm — and my guys compete better when I’m calm also. The more times in the chair, the more it becomes “normal” which helps also. But the BIGGEST realization was that despite my passion and live for the sport, it is just a sport and it’s not life. Perspective lowered my heart rate when I was coaching. I’m actually more anxious now when I’m NOT in the coaching chair. Steange. Lol

Outside of Spencer I don’t think it matters. PSU is going to cruise right on by the Hawks. A healthy Marinelli has a higher ceiling but he has never put it all together. DeSanto has plateaued and I don’t think Lee loses to Eierman again. Iowa was extremely beat up at NCAAs. I go back to my arguments on another thread. All of these guys are physically breaking down. Six or seven years is too long
