Do you really think that there are three wrestlers out there at 171 better than Phillips? How about at 160, I think Cubberly deserves to be top three.

Robert: To paraphrase Bob Preusse: "it's a big country."

The 171 pounders ranked ahead of Chris Phillips are all capable of beating him as are some of the other hon. mentions like Hunter Collins and Jordan Blanton. Not saying Phillips couldn't beat them but they're very accomplished wrestlers in their own right. Phillips time will come as far as national rankings are concerned. For him to be so highly regarded as a frosh is amazing.

The top three guys at 160, Welch, Winston and Howe are all more accomplished than the very talented Eric Cubberly. Cubberly did sneak past Winston at the pre-season Super 32. But his overall accomplishments don't match up with Winston. Howe is incredible. And Jason Welch is the best senior in the country in my opinion. Watch Welch on video at flowrestling. He's a man among boys even when up against some of the most talented high school wrestlers at his weight.

re this years ASICS team, certain wts are always deeper, and from year to year it differs, and both 160 & 171 are deep with elite SENIORS this year---- thus both Cubberly and Phillips get knocked down a bit. At some of the middle and lower wts both Phillips & Cubberly would be top 3 or 4 all classes combined.

At 171 cant be sure how Phillips would do vs elite seniors Wright, Gambrall, Bennett, Hunter Collins, Blanton & Spangler ??? the controversy here is Wright over Gambrall, who beat Wright 6 to 0 in the Dream Team Classic---- yes i know its only a post season all star event, but both guys knew it meant alot even if it was held 6 weeks after the season ended and each guy got a bunch of pounds.

at 160 pounds Polz from Illinois is a great Senior, where did he get ranked by ASICS? very low, too low, he deserved to be a bit ahead of Cubberly i think and i like Cubberly alot. Ortiz from Oregon very tough, too. Its just a loaded weight class.

the most controversial ASICS pick besides Wright over Gambrall, imo, is 130 with Grajales over Jordan Oliver. Oliver to me has the look of a 2X NCAA champ at Okla St.

Grajales over Oliver. Asics takes into consideration your freestyle results as well. Oliver was a JR national champion last year in Fargo defeating Sanders. Oliver I thought hands down was the best 130 in the nation. I think they are going by the Super 32 results but that is preseason and hard to judge in a 2-1-1 format. Oliver is super slick and will fit right into the Ok. State lineup with his style.

You can't just look at results from the high school folkstyle season as most ppl do. Freestyle and greco are taken into consideration along with "off-season" folkstyle to find the most decorated all around wrestlers in the nation. Even though one wrestler may have beaten another, you still have to consider that it may end up differently in the other styles. Also, even if one kid is better, if another is consistantly wrestling and placing in more tournaments, they have to be given the edge for putting their name out there.

DanR,
thats what is puzzling , Oliver won Fargo freestyle last summer not only beating Sanders (only on the leg clinch really) but beating TRIGGAS soundly there too. Grajales did not wr last summer in Fargo, hurt i think. He is better in Greco.

most everyone in the Lehigh Valley is proclaiming Oliver the best wrestler in Easton history, covers alot of ground. Close call, but i would have to go with the senior in this case, Oliver.

my Jordan Oliver hyping apparently was prophetic -- one of the best 2X NCAA champs ever probably, along with guys like Metcalf, David Taylor, Randleman, Mocco.

its always fun to look back.

Hank, u asking wrong guy-- i was in the market for 30 years and learned one thing the hard way: no one makes money in the market except brokers, fund managers and insiders. And crooks, look at Madoff & theres a slew of others like him.

2007-2008 season had one of the great Ironmans (or Ironmen). Probably my favorite.

HK,

Stopped in your shop quickly (had only a few moments), but you were playing hooky. Next time.

Not only did Phillips beat Roddy, but he also knocked off Peltier who I believe was ranked 2nd at the time as well as Zac Thomusseit.
As a side note, I still think Hunter Stieber is overlooked at times. In the 2007 Ironman he ran thru Braschetta, Ty Mitch, Gus Sako and beat Devin Carter soundly in the finals.

2007 Ironman which was the 2007-2008 season, Hunter lost to Devin. 2006 Hunter beat him soundly in the 103 final. Funny thing was that Devin Carter was the most impressive looking (to me) in the earlier rounds in his weight classes both years.

HK, sometime in the afternoon. Spur of the moment, as I saw a parking spot right in front and dived in. They said you were around somewhere and looking outside as they said it.
