All-Star Classic awarded to Columbus; National Duals saying at UNI through 2011
After finishing second at the 2008 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, it didn’t seem like there was much more Ohio State coach Tom Ryan could to bring momentum into Columbus and excitement to the wrestling program.
Well, there was.

Media was asked to wait to say anything until the NWCA press release came out. Since it is on InterMat it is safe to discuss now.
Both J Jaggers and Mike Pucillo will probably be extended invitations as the defending national champions since the event is in Columbus.
As a returning AA Lance Palmer is on the short list for an invitation, but will more than likely have to wait for others before he knows. (From the way it was explaned to me it depends on what other people do or can't do; i.e. injuries, moving weights, people declining, etc.)
This is a great chance for the Ohio Wrestling community to make a statement or show their support for college wrestling. A good draw at the All Star meet would make Columbus a strong candidate to host it again in the future as well as events like the National Duals or even the NCAA Tournament. (The Schott has a capacity of 21,500. Different set ups for different events changes capacity.. see below.)

The state tournament configuration for the finals is about 17,000. I think it's the hockey configuration with one of the end zone sections eliminated for the head table stuff.
If they're smart at the Schott, I'd use the concert configuration for the all-star meet (I think that's the max).
Is this going to be at the Schott or St John?
Top returnees at each weight
125- Escobedo, Ness (though likely up at 133), Donahoe, Falck. The likely matchup Escobedo v Donahoe (last two champs)
133- Slaton, Gomez, Kennedy; note - Nickerson likely comes back to this weight with Grey up at 141. I would personally pick a Nickerson v Gomez matchup, as that's the most interesting.
141- Jaggers, Gallick, Kyler, Cleveland. Jaggers v Gallick a likely matchup, though I think Kyler would be an intriguing story.
149- Metcalf, Jenkins, Burroughs, Caldwell, O'Connor, Palmer. Metcalf v Caldwell is my pick for a matchup - with Palmer v Burroughs as an "undercard" match.
157- Leen, Poeta, Vallimont, Gillespie. My pick: Leen v Poeta in a title rematch.
165- Marable, Lewnes, Fay, Cannon, Reader, Dwyer. My pick is Marable v Lewnes
174- Luke, Borschel, Browne, Ancervage, Lucas. My pick is Luke v Browne to avoid an all-B10 match.
184- Pucillo, Varner, Todd, Jordan; Herbert comes back. Varner and Jordan are possible 197's. Pucillo v Herbert in a battle of NCAA champions though it's an all-B10 matchup would be my pick.
197- Taylor, Brester, Herbst, Askren. If Varner is up to 197, pit him against Taylor. If not, Taylor/Brester.
285- Rosholt, Zabriskie, Massey. Rosholt v Massey.

to finish up first post: 16,800 for wrestling finals, 19,000 for a basketball, with a max capacity of 21,500.
Got some additional details today...
2008 All Star Classic will be at St. John (capacity 13,276)
OSU wrestlers are expected to get at least three matches. Jaggers and Pucillo will get automatic invites as defending champs; both want to wrestle. OSU will also get a wild card as the host school so they will have a minimum of three participants. Depending on what happens at 149, they are hoping that Lance Palmer can get an invite on his own so they can use the host wildcard for a fourth OSU wrestler. (graduation, changing weights, injury, etc)
As a two time All American,
I think
Palmer earned the OSU wildcard; Reece Humphrey probably would be the fourth as a two-time national qualifier (he was 3-2 in St. Louis last year.) With a third or fourth OSU match from the wild card, a Schlatter-Palmer or Humphrey-Gomez rematch are two real possiblities for the eleventh match.

This is sweet! I think if the Ohio wrestling community can show in good numbers, it could lead to other things down the road. My question while in St. Louis this year was why can't Columbus do this.
Nationwide or the Schott...either work for me. St. Louis does have Union Station but I'm sure things could work.
If it was held at the Schott, people could walk to a near-by establishment or drive to a further restaraunt.
All that to say, Go Buckeyes!!!

Can we get 10,000??? Hank says 10,000 PLUS and additional 3,000!
If the largest is just under 8500, what can we do to beat it?

Let's be real here, Columbus for the NCAA championships is going to be a tough sell.
The Schott is out of the question because that weekend is going to be a state championship basketball weekend - and the OHSAA has that booked for the foreseeable future. Plus, the hotels, restaraunts, and such are not really near the Schott (in large quantity). The NCAA does not want an on-campus facility for the championship event, at least that's the trend.
That leaves it to Nationwide to bid for the event. Traffic flow, hotels, and restaraunts are all viable there.
The next three years are set in stone - back in St Louis for 2009, Omaha for 2010, and Philadelphia for 2011. After that, there's bidding soon.
From what I've read, St Louis is going to bid for a long-term contract starting with 2012. I think they're going to get it. Big facility for the championships - good traffic flow, hotels, and restaraunts. Another big plus is you make it a reasonable drive for much of the wrestling fan base - namely both Oklahoma State and Iowa fans can get there easily (and those are your two biggest ticket blocks at the championship).
I think the all-star meet can get a good sized crowd at St John. If it was a weekend, I'd think even bigger because you can have people drive there-and-back from across Ohio in a day (instead of getting home at approximately midnight). Of course, they have to have it on a Monday because of collegiate event logistics.

Buzzkill!
I liked St. Louis. I'd like it there for 2 years in a row, and then the third - spread the love. I think we could do it, but hey, that's just me.

I wish they would've brought the National Duals back to Ohio. My high school went to watch when they were at Cleveland State, which was only a little over an hour away. Now that I wrestle at the National Duals every year they are at UNI 14 hours away! That's ok, good venue...just another trip on the list of long drives every weekend.

No one showed up for the National Duals when they were in Columbus. Iowa made up most of the fan base. I think that if the All-Star Dual has a great turnout Columbus could make a serious bid for the NCAA Championships in the future.
You can put the event at Nationwide and they have a great downtown there plus hotels there and throughout the 270 belt loop. The airport is easily accessible and affordable to fly into and from. I think that if Ohio State and Columbus put together a proposal for this it would be a huge economic boost for the city and wrestling.

I attended National Duals in Columbus and the attendance was spotty. Attendance was even worse in Cleveland although the weather was horrible and there were several major hs events taking place the same weekend.
I wish Nationals or National Duals would return. If Buckeye wrestling and attendance continue to surge, I could see Columbus getting another crack at one of them.
