Check out the link (and all the rest that will pop up on the left side of the window) and check out the amazing facilities at Penn State. Matt Dernlan, Head Asst. Coach at PSU and 3x state champion from West Liberty-Salem, is the tour guide.

Impressive facilities - no denying that. But also you have to think that what happened to Dave Rella and Jared Platt might cause some top prospects to think twice( as I see it both wrestlers wanted to transfer out and were blindsided how PSU responded to what looked like being thrown under the bus as their families posted on line.) But they also didnt have to give Dave Rella the release that allowed hm to join the Buckeyes and wrestle for them next year. The state of Pennsylvania is loaded this year with young talent - the Pepplemens, the Altons etc. If they can keep those kids in state they will be right there in the hunt with Minnesota,Ohio State,Iowa - schools that have been keeping those elite kids from going out of state.

Tom:

In reality PSU was more than fair to the three athletes who broke team rules, they did not have to release any of the athletes. All the blog rumors that PSU was "screwing the kids" turned out to be false and insiders have indicated that there was more than enough reasons to release all of the three. The coaches took the high road and would not comment on any of the problems and gave them complete releases to compete. What more could any of them asked?

I have talked to a few PSU insiders with full knowledge of the situation, and they indicated all of the athletes should be very happy with the results.

Not to beat a dead horse...the issue with Rella, as I understand it, is that the team announced they were releasing him for disciplinary reasons which wasn't entirely the truth. That's the part to which the Rella family objected. Had Rella wanted to remain at Penn State, it's likely he'd still be on the squad. Fortunately for Buckeye fans, he's now in scarlet and gray.

Thanks Hank for clearing that up. I remember a post from Jared Platt's mom who stated her son wanted out as soon as he arrived. But as you wrote PSU did allow these kids their full release and as a fan of tOSU it will be great having Dave Rella on the team.

ah yes that old problem-- the BIG IF --- how to keep em at Penn St when the likes of John Smith, Cael Sanderson, Joe McFarland, J Robinson, Rob Koll, the ACC coaches with all those very nice warmer weather campuses, et all come calling. And now with Pat Santoro at Lehigh and Zeke Jones at U of Penn, Penn st has serious in state comp too for the top kids.
-------------------------------------------------

in retrospect Jared Platt , once he signed his LOI and then later did Not want to actually attend Penn St, Platt should have sat out a year and then signed wherever he wanted. Like Mark Grey did after signing with Lehigh and then changing his mind. Grey enrolled a year ago at Cornell where he made AA this past season.

Facilities are second to none. Amazing that all those were built without University -- all on alumni donations. Impressive.

PSU has some great training partners in their room. Matt's prize recruit from last year, Quentin Wright just won a bronze medal at the Jr. Worlds. He'll fill in nicely at 165. The in-room training situation is going to get better as well.

well Penn St will have a top 285, maybe not this season but very soon, in Cameron Wade formerly of Beford St Peter Chanel , he is a horse. He is a full size 285 and he is gonna be very good !!

i havent seen it yet posted-- and i'm Not posting it---- but theres been more bad vibes from Happy Valley involving prominent recent former Penn St wrestlers-- i'm not gonna dredge it up-- but theres been more to digest than just the unfortunate Rella, Platt, Scott situation.

its a truly great wrestling program , though, but there has to be some heat over there.

btw, was out on boat this weekend with among others 2X Stanford AA Josh Zupancik (of Walsh Jesuit) who leaves this week to become a grad asst at the U of Oklahoma. He will be in graduate school there while he helps coach the wrestling team.

There's plenty of threads on other sites concerning some of those situations -- but this thread was just to inform others to take a look at their amazing facilities -- and to get some good pub for a good friend.

I just saw Mr. and Mrs. Dernlan this past Sunday at church. They are excited about all that is happening with their 4 boys and are looking forward to making some more trips back into OH to watch Tim's team at Ashland compete.

Did anyone notice that Mike Ward is no longer on the PSU roster? I really thought that when Platt left, Ward would have a good shot at making the starting lineup. Maybe someone like CSU or OU could pick him up and fit him onto their team.

Go Vikings!!

Nittany Lion Wrestlers Welcome Two-Time National Champion Mark Perry to Coaching Staff: http://gopsusports.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/080708aad.html

This is what I meant by the "in-room training situation". I'd heard some time ago about this hire.

This should help Valimont, Wright, Erwin, and all the rest in those upper middle weights (and won't hurt when recruiting -- maybe his little brother as somebody else posted on themat.com).
