That sums up Andy's match.

Block off and he wins. No need to shoot there. CR#P!

His loss seems emblematic of our entire Olympic wrestling squad in all styles. What a bad performance as a whole. Mocco is all we have left (there's no way the Cuban carries Andy).

Yep -- very down Olympics for us. As I recall, it was very similar to 2004 right?

I don't recall much from 2004 other than Cael's gold. Perhaps you're right.
Did Cormier really cut too much weight, dehydrate himself, and have to drop out of the Olympics? If that's true, it's pathetic. The coaches and wrestler need to answer as to what happened and why. Cormier was the best pure wrestler we had.

Hank, I would post this question on themat.com but I want some intelligent discussion. :)
Why does Cejudo split the legs on when he's finishing his head outside shots and not hip down outside like Smith did all the time? He was in those 2-2 scramble situations quite a bit.
Here's a link to a Smith match to show what I'm talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpdKWeaedKE
Watch at about the 1:55 mark and you see him get his hip outside the leg. He does this again around 2:45 and 3:50 and you can see his opponent has to counter very differently. This is he gold medal match from '92. You can check it out in his match with Beloglasov as well (and see Beloglasov just turn and give the takedown).
You can see another finish he teaches in Coleman Scott pinning the Hawkeye in the NCAA finals this past year.

I know that Rulon Gardner was a bronze medalist in Greco-Roman, but I can't recall if we had any other freestyle medalists.
EDITED RESPONSE: Stephen Abas, Jamill Kelly, and Sara McMann were silver medalists, and Patricia Miranda was a bronze medalist.
For Comier, yes, if he did do that, it is bad -- but he's probably cut weight that way for years and with the extra day to recover he probably never experienced any bad results, so why change? Except as the body gets older...

BH: I've watched plenty of Smith's video and his finishes were fabulous. I see your point. Cejudo won because he had the will to do it. Was he being taught the best possible technique? Couldn't say.
Good point about Cormier except it's the Olympics and if you know you have less time to recover, you have to adjust. It's a shame that even at this level the wrestlers engage in the same weight cutting techniques one expects from junior high wrestlers.

I think they have plenty of time to recover. They weigh in on the day before they compete. Most of them drop 10 pounds on the final day and then put it right back on.
I asked the question about Cejudo's finishes because, seeing him get flipped repeatedly and rarely ever seeing Smith have that happen to him, just made me wonder. It goes without saying that Cejudo is an amazing wrestler and his medal color speaks for itself. Just wondering why more don't finish like the best finisher the USA has seen.

There has to be more to the Cormier story. It sounds too simple. Dehydration? Whatever.

Nice job by Mocco. Looks like he'll be keeping me up late. He's consistent with what he does and his defense is very good. He even hit a single. Pretty daring for him.

Think about it. This is not a trivial event. Then outcome greatly affects one's life. Not to mention years of training leading up to one moment. I can see having a bad showing with spent legs or humidity affecting breathing. But to have a weigh-in defeat you before the prize seems absolutely ridiculous to me. They let a swimmer with cancer put off treatment until after the games. Something stinks.
