Discussion Topic: Deitchler's recent decision to train full-time at the OTC
Grant Varnum added to this discussion on August 21, 2008
With Jake's recent phone call to Minnesota, opting to go the route of the OTC, I am curious as to the opinions (eh hem Mr. Lester), that people have on his decision.
Obviously, the young man has a ton of talent... Do I think we may have been better represented by someone else with considerable international experience (eh hem Mr. Lester) in Beijing? In my opinion, very much so.
However, that is not to take anything away from Jake's abilities... not many young men have the potential at 18 years-old to make that jump, and be competitive with the best in the world. I am just wondering that if there is anyone out there (eh hem Mr. Lester) that has been through making such a decision, and has been able to look back on a very impressive international career, what advice or suggestions he might have for someone else that might be trying make a similar choice between the NCAA and the OTC?

Grant,
Harry has already posted on here that he would talk to Jake and encourage him to go the "train Greco-Roman specific" route.
Here is that post concerning it:
Quote from Harry Lester's post:

"Hank:
I think Jake is making the right decision in choosing the less-chosen road of training in Greco-Roman right out of high school. If he wants to be a world and olympic medalist he has to take this road. Everyone says you only get 4 years of NCAA wrestling, and I agree with that, but what most people don't realize is that those 4 years, 18-21, are critical in developing skills. I would never tell a kid not to try to wrestle in the NCAA, but I would inform him that if his goals are to be a Olympic champion then he needs to be training Greco-Roman or freestyle during these years. I plan on talking to Jake once he gets back from China because I think he could really open the doors even more for kids that are thinking of training right out of high school. The program up here is unbelievable and it keeps getting better. I can almost promise you that at least 6 of our next 7 world team and Olympians will come out of this program. For the guys that want to be Greco-Roman wrestlers, this is the place to be - no ifs, ands, or buts about it."

I like that he is focusing on Greco-Roman. Our national team will be all the better for it. I do not like J Robinson's response to his decision, but his response is to be expected, I suppose, as he did just lose a very talented prospect. I hope Jake does as he plans and pursues his degree while competing. I know that will be very difficult, but I'm sure he will find it worth it in the long run. There's nothing wrong with taking the road less traveled.

Is there an article out there about Jake's decision to go to the OTC?
