Discussion Topic: Notre Dame announces wrestling recruiting class of 33!
Dan Cosimi added to this discussion on August 31, 2008

Earlier today Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio released its wrestling program's recruiting class of 2008. Included in this mega-class of thirty-three wrestlers are Ohio high school state champions Don Stocum from Kirtland and Jeff Pelton, a 2007 graduate from Bellevue who transferred in from Indiana University. Virginia high school state champion Jared King from Great Bridge will also join the Falcons. Here is a look at the class...

Thanks for the list, dude!!! There's a little Central Ohio flavor in the mix. How big is the NDC wrestling room!?!?!?!?!

Add some of the talents from this class--Pelton, Rohler, Stocum--to guys like Savage, Rini, Koballa, Crenshaw and Tripp. That's a nice looking wrestling room. I did check the NDC roster and Tom Straughn was not listed (although it was last season and he may not have been added at the time). Obviously, he's a huge addition if on the squad.

I think CSU is the team that takes the biggest hit from the recruiting of NDC. Ben Stehura had better be a good salesman.

Hank,

You are exactly right there. I think that CSU is taking a huge hit losing some of these wrestlers. How many of these kids would have gone to CSU in the past? Names like Rohler, Straughn, Pelton, King and Koballa all are DI caliber talent. I think that Notre Dame could very well be the NAIA National Champions this year if all goes well.

Straughn is at Notre Dame and will start at 157 pounds.

As for Rohler, I think we'll see him in 2009-2010 at 174 pounds.

Two other names that will be new (per se) to the Falcon lineup will be brothers Chris Tripp and Justin Tripp. Chris has a 3.8 grade point average and is on track to start at 184 pounds. If you don't remember him from his days at University School, he was a state champion as a junior (over Pucillo and Hurley) and third in the state as a senior before also taking third place at NHSCA Senior Nationals. Justin has built his body up and will be a powerhouse at heavyweight. He placed third in the state as a senior at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. With him at heavyweight, true freshman Don Stocum will be given a chance to redshirt.

Mark:
The facility at NDC is nice. I don't know exactly how many people will fit in there but I'm sure they'll make it work.

Steve:
John Carroll is not in the ballpark of Notre Dame as far as wrestling talent goes, but to be fair, they aren't on a level playing field scholarship-wise and that makes a huge difference.

That's a nice class but its going to be tough to win that title. It will be a good race with us, Notre Dame, Lindenwood, and McKendree. Good luck to Notre Dame. Coach Romano is a great coach. He was my favorite coach at Aurora.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but watch out for the kid from Great Bridge named Jared King. In a few short years, he will be a factor for this team.

Jared King was the third seed at the Ironman this past year, and ended up placing if I remember. The kid is really tough, that is a big get for them.

I have never seen a recruiting class so large, and with quality depth. I realize there program is new and they are NAIA but what is their budget with regard to scholarships? I hope they have room to expand the wrestling room, because if they can get a couple more classes like this, where will they put them? They should dominate the division right out of the gate. Another Ohio team making a run at a national championship not only helps our wrestling community but validates its depth.

I believe the way NAIA works with scholarships is that they can give unlimited amount of money (as much as school will provide), but they may only start 8.0 full scholarships at any given time.
