World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan begins tomorrow. Surprise there has been so little discussion about it on this forum.

Here’s the scoop: Ohio has three wrestlers competing in the World Championships: Tommy Rowlands, Joe Heskett, and Harry Lester. In addition to the above three named wrestlers, USA World Team Freestyle Assistant Coach Lou Rosselli, and USA World Team Alternate Andy Hrovat are also there.

This is the first time more than one Ohio wrestler has been on a US World team at the same time. We have three. High schools represented are: Columbus Bishop Ready, Walsh Jesuit, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and St. Edward. Colleges represented: the Ohio State University, University of Michigan, and Northern Michigan University/ USOEC.

Harry Lester (a member of this forum) will wrestle the first day (tomorrow), along with Lindsey Durlacher and Joe Betterman. Betterman was a counselor for the Ohio Cadet National Team training camp about 3 or 4 years ago.

Pretty much everything you need to follow regarding Team USA, you can get throught the following web link: http://www.themat.com/specialevents/2007/worlds/default.php

FILA has a pretty good web link and free video feed of the championships:
http://www.FILA-wrestling.com/baku07/index.php?lang=en

Finally, if you haven’t discovered Flowrestling, you got to check out the video’s associated with the world championship. Best ones to watch are: the Cog Hill training, the interview with Terry Brands, the team meeting with Kevin Jackson, the 8:00 a.m. workout in Baku, and the a hilarious video of the team relaxing playing a mind game called mafia. All of the flowrestling video’s gives you a indepth behind the scenes look into Team USA. You really get the sense that this team is coming together both with respect to their athletic goals and as a team. Some of the video’s like Terry Brands interview is just simply amazing: http://www.flocasts.org/flowrestling/index.php

Update on Lester

FIRST ROUND: Lester dec. Juha Hiltunen (Finland), 7-0, 6-0

First Period
Lester scores a 1-point takedown at :25. Lester scores a powerful 3-point high dive at :55 seconds, dropping Hiltunen to his back and nearly earning the fall. Hiltunen quickly earns an escape, but Lester quickly scores 3 more points on another high dive at 1:05. Lester dominates the period, winning 7-0.

Second Period
Hiltunen attempts to bear hug Lester, but Lester scores a 3 point throw with double-overhooks as he is getting pushed to the edge. Lester finishes the period and the match, scoring a 1-point takedown right into a 2-point gut wrench at :41. The final score ends at 6-0.

SECOND ROUND: Lester dec. Seref Eroglu (Turkey), 3-2, 3-0
First Period
Lester scores on a three-point high dive early in the period. Eroglu earns a point at 1:30 when Lester is unable to score from the top position. Eroglu earns 1-point for a lift at 1:36, but is unable to score again. Lester wins the period 3-2.

Second Period
Lester continues to snap the head and attack the body to begin the second period. He secures a bear hug and drives Eroglu out of bounds, scoring one-point at :55. Eroglu escapes from the bottom immediately after the 1:00 mark, but Lester again scores a step-out point at 1:11. Lester scores the final point at 1:33 when he defends Eroglu’s lift and gets a reversal. Lester wins the period 3-0.

THIRD ROUND: Lester dec. Mayil Consuegra (Cuba), 1-1, 3-0
First Period
No scoring in the first minute. Neither wrestler is able to score from the top position so both wrestlers earn 1 point. The 1-1 tie goes to Lester because he was able to defend Consuegra in the final :30 seconds and scored the last point.

Second Period
Lester scores one-point at :21 on a Consuegra step-out. Lester scores a two-point gut wrench at 1:29 to take a 3-0 lead. The referee inadvertently blows the whistle at the 1:30 mark when Lester had Consuegra on his back on the gut wrench hold. According to the rules, the wrestlers resumed in the neutral position where the match ended without any more scoring. Lester wins the second and final period 3-0.

QUARTER FINALS ROUND: Lester dec. Ionel Puscasu (Romania), 5-0, 3-1
First Period
No scoring in the first minute. Lester wins the coin flip. Lester locks up a front headlock and scores two consecutive two-point turns to take a 4-0 lead. Lester earns a reversal point at 1:40 and wins the first period 5-0.

Second Period
Lester scores two-points at :20 when he stops Puscasu’s throw and plants him on his back as the two wrestlers go out of bounds. Puscasu scores one-point at 1:30 when Lester is unable to score from the top position. Lester escapes at 1:32 and the period ends in the neutral position, with Lester securing the third and final point for a 3-1 period win.

66 KG
SEMIFINALS: Farid Mansurov (Azerbaijan) dec. Lester, 6-3, 4-1
First Period
No scoring in the first minute. Mansurov wins the coin flip and starts on top. Mansurov scores a two-point front headlock at 1:21. In a wild flurry, Lester rolls through the front headlock and puts Mansurov on his back for two-points and a one-point hold down to take a 3-2 lead at 1:30. Lester starts on top and moves out in front with a front headlock at about 1:33 when Mansurov arches out of the front headlock and flips Lester, exposing Lester’s back for three-points. The period ends in the neutral position with Mansurov earning a point because Lester failed to score from the top position.

Second Period
Mansurov scores a takedown for one-point at approximately :37. Mansurov earns a second point at :54 when Lester steps out of bounds. At 1:28 Mansurov scores a two-point gut wrench to take a 4-0 lead. Lester scores on a Mansurov step-out at 1:55, but the final whistle blows with Mansurov securing the win and the period 4-1.

So far Lester is 4 and 1. He earns shot at another Bronze by beating former World Champ Seref Eroglu for second straight year in process: I believe he has to win one more for a chance get into the Bronze medal match.

Lester earns a third and final point as Lorincz is unable to score from the top position.

Not sure if Lester won the Bronze just yet. Looking at the bracket, Lester dec. Tamas Lorincz, 3-1, 2-1 (Hungary) for the Bronze medal match. Also, N. Gergov (Bul) dec. A. Adikyan (Arm) for the Bronze medal match. I believe Gergov (Bul) and Lester wrestle for Bronze next?

Actually, two Bronze Medals are awarded at the World Championships. Lester has won the Bronze, as has Gergov, they will not wrestle each other.

And very importantly, the 145.5 weight class has been qualified for the Olympics next year in Greco.

How did the USA do in the other two weights (GR) contested this day?

What happened to defending world champion Joe Warren, the baddest man in wrestling? Did he get injured? I was really looking forward to Joe kicking some Soviet butt in Baku. I hope he will be ready for the Olympics. I think everyone knows which one.

I believe The Mat reported that Warren entered into an agreed suspension with the governing body over the use of a prohibited substance. It was supposedly cannabis (marijuana) and not a performance enhancing drug... unless you're competing at Taco Bell.

Durlacher finished fifth, so he qualified the 55kg weight class to the Olympics. Betterman did not place, so we will still need to qualify that weight.

Today, Dantzler is done and will not place so we will need to qualify his weight as well. But the man of the hour is BRAD VERING who will be representing the USA in the 84kg GOLD Medal match.

There is still a chance that Ruiz will be pulled back in for a chance at the bronze after a close loss to the 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist and 2007 European Champion, Nozadze from Georgia. If so, that would qualify 55kg, 66kg, 84kg, and 96kg, with World Champion Dremiel Byers set to wrestle tomorrow at 120kg.

Ruiz is done and will not place.

The only Freestyle weights tomorrow will be 55kg and 60kg. Schwab, Heskett, and Williams will wrestle on Thursday, and Cormier and Tommy will wrestle on Friday along with the first Women's weight class.
