Pretty solid team.
I think it's a team that can finish top five.
New Jersey is the strong favorite if you ask me. Strong throughout the lineup without giving away matches.
Defending champ Illinois is going to be well-organized. The hosts Oklahoma are very talented, but I think have a couple of deficiencies in the lineup. Iowa is very talented too.
Minnesota or California is probably the next best team (that would be sixth I think). They're very good in some places, but have holes.
The key ingredient to winning this event will be the ability to send 15 kids out that can compete in every match. The dilemna Ohio has is that at 105 and 215, we're giving away matches against most of the core teams. That makes the onus even greater to win the tossup matches in the lower and middleweights.

Josh, if you see this - two questions:
1. Do the top top 2 teams from each pool move to the finals?
2. Your opinion was that IL was the favorite, I was suprised to see our team in the same pool. Was there seeding?
Thanks for your continued knowledge.

way way way too early to crow--- Ohio is not beating very good teams so far: Okla 2, NJ 2, Tennessee, Michigan-- i did Not see one well known name on any of these teams. Ohio is strong but wait until Ohio meets Oklahoma 1, NJ 1, Iowa 1, Illinois 1 --- then the fur will fly.

Seeds based on points:
1) NJ
2) MN-1
3) IL
4) FL
5) IA
6) OH
7) OK
8) WI
Therefore OH pooled with IL.
OH is up 17-10 after 135!
Hunter Stieber beats state champ Klimara. Logan Stieber beat Morrison in a battle of Fargo champs. Nick Dardanes beat Felipe Martinez in a three period battle of state champs. Cam Tessari beats Chris Dardanes in a good matchup.

You guys want to know why Ohio has such a good team? Because they asked Jeff Jordan and Erik Burnett to coach it. Those guys reached out to the best kids.
Put Harry Lester and Will Knight in charge of the Greco squad and watch their performance improve. The same goes for Fargo.

Jeff Jordan, is he coaching out there in Okla ??? thats news to me.
maybe i didnt get the whole story, but at state freestyle i was told its Eric Burnett and Todd Haverdill. Haverdill has been very active with the Ohio fargo cadet FR team in past years. He is one of the very best young coaches anywhere, Todd Haverdill is building a powerhouse at Brecksville HS..
Harry Lester was an Ohio Greco coach in fargo last year, Ohio still had poor Greco performance. Key to Greco success is getting the best Ohio wrestlers to "double"-- meaning to wr both FR & GR-- thats FACT.
When Ohio did very well in Greco going back quite a few years, it was because wrestlers like Mark Jayne, Harry Lester, Tommy Rowlands, J.D. Bergman, the Schlatters, wrestlers of this caliber wrestled both FR & Greco in Fargo. In recent years, many Ohio stars have done only FR.

Hank: As far as I know, it's Burnett and Haverdill coaching the team. Yes, there was a reach out to the Graham kids - starting first and foremost with the interest of David Taylor in competing.
It certainly does make life easier (as easy as a large scale effort can be given the alternatives out there) in organizing a team with elite competitors on it when (1) you have a straight line to the kids Erik Burnett works with (2) you're able to pitch the Graham kids on the benefits of participating. And things build from there.
The fact we beat IL last night ends up being so huge because of the way the pools are today.
IL, NJ, OK, IA
OH, MN, CA, MO
OH beat CA already by some ungodly margin. MN beat MO.
IA beat 3x defending champs IL in a close match while NJ beat OK.
And to re-emphasize, the kids are performing very well; also Todd and Erik did a terrific job in coordinating the effort.

Looking at the team scoring, I noticed that if you beat a kid in 2 periods, the winner was getting 3 team points, but the loser was sometimes getting 1 point. Can someone explain the team scoring??
P.S. Heflin is doing a nice job at 171, but I would have liked to have seen Phillips instead, but he was at Disney duals.

Hank,
to my knowledge Jeff Jordan has never shown any interest in freestyle, ive never seen him at the state freestyle tourn, and i don't think he encourages his kids to go to fargo from what ive been told.
Will Knight coached Greco last year as did Harry Lester, at least i saw both at the fargo camp at st Eds. The Hilliard Davidson asst whose name escapes me has been involved with Greco in recent years.
the fact is in the 15 or more years i've covered it closely, Greg Urbas of st Eds is the One Constant-- and the Minerva coach too, coach Jeff Kullman is unsung but always involved for many years. Frank Jayne has done alot. These 3 are still involved.
st Eds will house both Cadets and Juniors camp, quite a chore !!!!!!!!!! st Eds has housed Juniors camps for many years. Think Urbas, what he does for Ohio wrestling is enormous.
Chris Kallai has done alot and is now Ohio Chairman of USA WR, Leo Saniuk is Vice Chairman. Eric Burnett and Todd Haverdill are now mainstay coaches. I'm sure i am forgeting some key players of the last 15 years.
Some key coaches over the years but not involved now, incl Dave Riggs of Massillon Perry and coach Speelman from Mansfield. Speelman was on the All-Marine Corps Greco team. Tom Knupp served as Ohio Chairman prior to Kallai and before him i believe was Ken Ramsey, Sr.

I stand corrected. It's Haverdill--not Jordan.
Ohio has a terrific squad. I think they'll squeeze past Minny and meet NJ in the finals.
Wheres PA?

PA-- like Ohio the past 2 years-- PA did not send a Jr duals freestyle team. Its a money thing & competing events, families have tough choices to make between Jr Duals, Fargo, NHSCA Va Beach events, and Disney Duals.
Ohio lucky to put together this very good team, after all Phillips went to Disney Duals. Disney duals has the best business model, each kid guaranteed 10 or 11 matches, combined with family vacation. Ty Mitch went 11 & 0, btw.
NHSCA Seniors has not recently been and never will be, imo, as good a tourn since it left Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Very expensive. I am told by an insider that NHSCA was down quite a bit in entries in all its VA beach tourn. I don't know if Disney was down ? The economy is part of the problem now.

From what I had read, it was more a money issue with PA than an organization issue.
If you took what didn't go to Disney and lined it up, it was still pretty competitive. And that's with three or four pretty substantive entries at Disney - Diesel (which won it), Quest (which was 3/4), MAWA (which was 3/4), and PA Premium.
You still could have put together a core group starting with Megaludis, Horan, Kindig, Alton, Alton, and Cowburn then went from there.
PA Premium: Sherlock, Shober, and Myers were InterMat top 100 seniors to be. Candelaria and Warner placed at Beast. Marsteller is a top junior high prospect.
Diesel: Peppelman is a top five natinonal senior to be, Evans top ten to 15, Fausey an elite member of the recently graduated class. Fleming and Brown both solid kids out of this graduated group in PA. Demott is a solid junior-to-be. Rice, Buckman, Greevy, and Wilson all placed in PA 3A.
MAWA (does have a couple NJ kids on the entry though): Malone, Rauenzahn, and Craig are weight class ranked. Owens, Callahan, Callender, and Bennett all have finals apperances in their career of their state level events.
Quest (one NJ kid in Mancuso): Includes Beckman, Shane Young, Garrett Frey, Mancuso, and Owen.

Jon Horne is the Davidson assistant. VERY involved from what I can tell. If I'm not mistaking he took a group of kids to Siberia. Yeah...THAT Siberia! I think it was 3 or 4 of them but they went.
As it turns out, one of those kids is heading to Northern tSUN to train full-time Greco. Ans good luck to him. HINT: Buy a parka! Maybe TWO!!!
