If there is no clear cut starter at a weight, what criteria do you look at to determine who starts at any particular dual or meet?
There were some comments that we didn't get into recruiting Derek Garcia until late. Can you tell us about that process and how we ended up with him?

Great questions so far!
And while Mark's questions aren't exactly "common" ones, I'm going to ask them anyway because, after all, Mark is the "greatest fan in the world"™®.

What are you doing differently from previous OSU coaches and why do you think that has yielded such a quick turnaround in OSU performance from previous years?
The last couple of years, the OSU team has underperformed at the B10 tournament but then have come on strong at the NCAAs. What, if any, changes are going to be made in preparation this year prior to the Big Ten tournament to try to secure a higher B10 finish than in previous years?

Lineup questions:
1) Sean Nemec began the year as the starter at 157 pounds but since National Duals we've seen a lot of Tony Jameson. Nemec seemed to be doing a solid job. Why has a change been made? Is it for the rest of the season? Is a wrestle-off result the reason for the change?
Obviously Ohio State has two quality wrestlers competing at this wt. I'm just trying to get a sense of what the criteria is for determining the starter is esp. since we're likely to see more of these types of situations in the future.
2) Pat Harrington wrestled impressively early in the season at the Oklahoma Gold tourney. He seems to have disappeared. Is he still wrestling? Is he still competing for the starting spot at 125?

Recruiting...the fence around Ohio was a great idea but not realistic ( example losing David Taylor,Jamie Clark) and hard to keep kids everyone is after like Chris Phillips so how do you approach recruiting from a philosopical approach? Is it look for an Ohio star first then branch out nationally? Or to do both simultaneously? Doesnt it come down to money at the end of the day? Have you considered following football coach Kiffin at USC and signing a midget superstar?

Coach Ryan---
What are you planning to do to increase your fan base and get more than wrestlers, parents, coaches, and the (comparatively speaking) small amount of fans excited about wrestling? What can we, as fans do to help this cause?
Who is the biggest team motivator?
I'll second the "What happened to the Buckeye Wrestling Show?" post.
I've been in contact with several coaches who are without any type of youth wrestling program. What advice would you give them in initiating one?
Finally, can you and your wife go out to dinner sometime so I can babysit your children?

I've been to several Ohio State wrestling duals in NE Ohio. One was at CSU (Coach Hellickson's last season), one at St Eds and one at Kent. They always drew large crowds. Are there any plans to wrestle a dual in NE Ohio in the future?
Will there be future duals with Kent State? OU? NDC?

We used to attend the Southern Scuffle and other tournaments such as... just wondering the reasoning behind dropping those. I guess more to the point, what is the philosophy behind tOSU's schedule?

Bob Preusse added to this discussion on February 9, 2010
ask Tom Ryan, is BobPreusse an annoyance or a good guy ?
imo, both Sponseller and Rella are coming on which helps. But they are in tough weight class – and will be tough to reach the top 4 for Spon and AA for Rella. Humphrey & Palmer probable finalists.
Pucillo will be a huge key for Ohio State. He is a former national champ and is in a weight where 5-6 different guys can win.
The points off the rankings look like this: 1. Iowa 110, 2. IowaStU 83; 3. Cornell 77; 4. Minnesota 63; 5. Okla St 62; 6. Boise St 60; 7. Wisconsin 52; 8. Ohio St 45.
