Discussion Topic: What has happened to freestyle wrestling?
Scott Nicola added to this discussion on July 18, 2007

Tonight I was again treated to some excellent late 80's/early 90's freestlye wrestling on Matside with Bob Deili. Having recently watched alot of older freestyle on youtube and Matside I can't help but notice how much more offensively oriented it used to be. Guys like Smith, Monday, Campbell, Cross etc. used to light it up with a wide variety of offensive attacks. It definitely seems under the current rules the guys with the most success are the ones who strategies and are able to score early and shut it down. If these rules were in effect 15-20 years ago would guys like Smith and Monday have the same legacy that they do today?

I completely agree, Scott. I tried to watch matches from the World Team Trials. They were pitiful. Roberson vs. Zadick was a particularly boring match. Apparently, stalling cannot be called on either wrestler. And if nothing happens for a minute the ref tells one wrestler to grab the others leg and see if anything happens. It reminded me of pee wee wrestling when little kids are taught what a single leg takedown is. I don't know if the best two out of three periods if good either. It takes advantage away from guys with good conditioning. You can't wear down an opponent in 4 minutes. Especially if he doesn't have to engage you. I can't imagine a non-fan watching a freestyle match and finding anything entertaining about it. Then there is Greco. I have never seen scoring before the clinch. I'm sure it happens sometimes, but I haven't seen it yet. I don't know what has happened to Greco, but it seems to be in worse shape than freestyle. Where are the pins? Where are the throws that it is famous for? I never realized how much fun folkstyle really is. Let's hope international wrestling gets their act together and make it fun to watch again.
