Discussion Topic: NCAA D1 "Pick The Champs" Contest
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on March 13, 2011

Rules:
Choose the finalists and pick the wrestler you think will emerge as champ at each of the ten weight classes.

Example: 125 pounds: Kornblut over Cosimi

Points will be awarded as follows:

Choose One Correct Finalist: 1 point
Choose Correct Champion: 2 points
Choose both finalists correctly: 3 points
Choose both finalists and correct champion: 5 points

-- In case of tie: the individual that selected the most champions will be the winner.
--If tie still exists, whoever selected the most correct finalists will be the winner. After that, it's a coin flip.

Post your selections on this forum. You may change selections as often as you like until 9am EST on Thursday, March 17. At that time, you're locked in.
---------------

First Prize: One All Beef Salami from Mister Brisket, Inc. (I'll pay shipping) plus a gift certificate good for 2 Large Sandwiches. I'm assuming most of you can make it to Cleveland at some point.

Runner-Up: One All Beef Salami or Gift Certificate for 2 Large Sandwiches (Your Choice)

3rd Place: Gift Certificate for One Box Lunch (includes sandwich, drink, chip, cookie)

If you don't want to publicly post your selections, send me your choices via private message.

Hint: Look at the Brackets. You don't want to pick two finalists who are on the same side.

Good Luck To All.

My picks--they won't count...just want to do it, too.

125 pounds: Anthony Robles (Arizona State) over Matt McDonough (Iowa)
I love McDonough but he's never wrestled Robles before.

133 pounds: Jordan Oliver (Oklahoma State) over Tony Ramos (Iowa)
The Iowa frosh gets hot until the finals.

141 pounds: Kellen Russell (Michigan) over Boris Novachkov (Cal Poly)
Pound-for-pound, Russell is one of the top 3 wrestlers in D1.

149 pounds: Frank Molinaro (Penn State) over Kyle Dake (Cornell)
A healthy Caldwell is the best wrestler in the country but I'm not convinced that's the case.

157 pounds: David Taylor (Penn State) over Bubba Jenkins (Arizona State)
D.T.'s biggest obstacle will be St. John.

165 pounds: Jordan Burroughs (Nebraska) over Andrew Howe (Wisconsin)
Burroughs remains the only wrestler in the field that can take Howe down.

174 pounds: Ed Ruth (Penn State) over Jon Reader (Iowa State)
Ruth has so much talent. Can he wrestle smart throughout the tourney?

184 pounds: Joe LeBlanc (Wyoming) over Steve Bosak (Cornell)
Wyoming? Why not?

197 pounds: Clayton Foster (Oklahoma State) over Cam Simaz (Cornell)
Going with a hot kid from a great program.

285 pounds: Dom Bradley (Missouri) over Blake Rasing (Iowa)
I miss the days of Rowlands, Mocco and Konrad. This group of Hvys has no standouts.

Danny C--is there any way to lock this topic up top?

Precin over Robles(Precin wrestles smarter match this go around against McD and then uses blueprint of how he beat Robles last time)
Oliver over Long(Oliver gets early td and wrestles smart)
Thorn over Russell(Thorn is difficult to wrestle numerous times without a loss to)
Caldwell over Molinaro (Dake not wrestling to expectation this year, Caldwell has too much offense)
Taylor over Jenkins(Taylor wins as a frosh)
Burroughs over Howe(Burrough's explosiveness is one in a million)
Reader over Ruth(Reader puts it all together)
Wright over Bosak(Wright continues amazing comeback)
Simaz over Foster(Simaz outlasts everyone)
Rey over Trice(Rey benefits from having Mocco as a coach)

*I pick Kilgore as 3rd at 197. IMO, whoever wins that semi will do so by smallest of margins.

125 pounds: Nic Bedelyon (Kent State) over Anthony Robles (Arizona State)
133 pounds: Jordan Thome (Army) over Ian Paddock (Ohio State)
141 pounds: Casey Thome (Army) over Jimmy Kennedy (Illinois)
149 pounds: Brian Stephens (Virginia Tech) over Kyle Dake (Cornell) - Both Dake and Caldwell have been struggling a lot with conditioning and/or weight issues. Dake has a lot more mat time, so I'll go with him until I see how Caldwell does in the first couple rounds
157 pounds: David Taylor (Penn State) over Jesse Dong (Virginia Tech)
165 pounds: Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) over Zach Toal (Missouri)
174 pounds: Nick Heflin (Ohio State) over Jon Reader (Iowa State)
184 pounds: Chris Honeycutt (Edinboro) over Cody Magrum (Ohio State)
197 pounds: Dustin Kilgore (Kent State) over Zac Thomusseit (Pittsburgh)
285 pounds: Brendan Barlow (Kent State) over Cameron Wade (Penn State)

Guess I'm the only self-respecting homer left in these parts.

I want to apologize in advance to all the fine wrestlers that I picked to win. I'm notoriously bad at picks, so I'm sure I have doomed these guys.

125: Precin vs. Robles - Precin
If McDonough makes the final, I like Robles, but I see Precin winning that semi and his experience wrestling Robles in the past will make the difference.

133: Oliver v. Long - Oliver
Peterkin(PENN) upsets Hochstrasser(Boise) in the quarters and clears the way from Long to reach the finals. Oliver wins in a stall-fest.

141: Russell vs. Alton - Russell
Much like 133, Nauman(Pitt) upsets Thorn and clears the way for super-frosh Alton (who pins Novachkov in the quarters). Russell wins 4-2.

149: Caldwell vs. Molinaro - Caldwell
Molinaro over Chamberlain(Boise) in the bottom semi. I like Parks(OSU) to beat Dake in the quarters and Calwell to win the title in matches that aren't as close as the score.

157: Hall vs. Taylor - Taylor
Dong beats Jenkins and then loses a close on to Hall. Taylor v Fittery lives up to the hype with Taylor wining a 12-9 thriller. Taylor beats Hall with a workmanlike effort in the final, 6-1.

165: Burroughs vs. Caldwell - Burroughs
Burroughs runs through everyone here, Asper in the semis and Caldwell(Oklahoma) in the final. Caldwell beats a hampered Howe in the bottom semi.

174: Reader vs. Lewnes - Lewnes
Lewnes avenges both his losses, beating Ruth in the semis and Reader in the final.

184: LeBlanc vs. Bosak - LeBlanc
LeBlanc over Honeycutt up top, Bosak over Perry down low. LeBlanc wins 3-1.

197: Simaz vs. Brandvold - Simaz
The winner of that top semis is your champ. It was a great bout last time, I think it will be again. Simaz learns from his mistakes and pulls out the "W".

285: Bradley vs. Tomei - Bradley
Bradley takes out Rey and Russo in the top half and Tomei beats Lane, Flores and Rasing to make the finals.
