That's a quality pick up for Tim Dernlan. Fickel is a top 100 recruit according to InterMat. Congrats to Fickel and Ashland.

I'm a huge Brent Fickel fan. A few years ago I was standing next to him at Brecksville and we talked for a while. I walked away thinking he was a really nice kid and way too cool to be a 15 year-old. Anyway, I think this is a great signing for both the wrestler and the college. Fickel has Division 1 talent. He'll be very successful at the Division 2 level. I don't understand why more people don't go this route. Could he be an All-American in Division 1? Sure. But in Division 2, he'll be national championship contender and a multiple-time All-American.
I'd be interested to see what weight class he'll wrestle at this year. I'd like to see him get that elusive state title. I think he beats anyone around his weight in Division 2 not named Skonieczny.

That's a big pickup for Ashland. Brent is a class act and one of the most enjoyable kids to talk to about wrestling. He is years ahead of himself when it comes to understanding the sport.

From talking with the coaches up at Ashland and wrestling there myself a little while back they have things going in the right direction. When you look at the teams in D2 who win nationals, like UNO before they got cut, they pick up a lot of D1 talent. From what I hear Fickel won't be the only big name Ashland picks up in this class.

Ashland should be a Powerhouse program in DII. I have similar feelings about Ashland in DII that I have about tOSU in DI. Given their location and their Head Coach, they should be contenders year in and year out. I hope this is the start of something great.
