Wilmington to discontinue three varsity sports
October 25, 2011
In the face of declining participation levels, Wilmington College is discontinuing three of its varsity sports programs, effective immediately.
The affected sports are wrestling and men and women’s golf.
“These were extremely difficult decisions that were made after careful consideration of many factors,” said Terry Rupert, Wilmington College’s vice-president for athletics administration/director of athletics. “Our golf and wrestling teams have brought us local, regional and national acclaim, but in recent years we have seen a declining number of participants in these sports. In today’s economic climate it is imperative that we make sound decisions based on the cost effectiveness of our sports programs. Those factors weighed heavily in our decision to discontinue the sports.”
Wilmington College is an NCAA Division III member of the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Wilmington College will sponsor men’s and women’s varsity lacrosse teams, beginning with the 2012-13 academic year.
“A significant percentage of Wilmington College’s students participate in intercollegiate athletics,” Wilmington College interim president Jim Reynolds said. “The College is committed to providing the most complete collegiate experience possible for our students, and adding lacrosse — the fastest growing sport in the nation — will help us continue that mission.”
National searches for men’s and women’s coaches are under way. The teams will begin competition during the spring 2013 season and will play their home games at the 3,500-seat Williams Stadium.
“We are excited to add lacrosse to our athletics family,” said Terry Rupert, Wilmington College’s vice-president for athletics administration/director of athletics. “This decision was made after extensive research and consideration, and we look forward to expanding the opportunities we offer to students — both in the classroom and on the playing field.”

The biggest issue is that Wilmington has never done a "national search" for a wrestling coach. This, more than anything, has lead to the declining numbers at Wilmington.

Terry Rupert is the AD at Wilmington. Any and all responses to him are welcome!

Show me a wrestling program that fails and it's a guarantee that it did not have appropriate athletic department support. If the AD cares, hires a solid coach and gives him the necessities to be successful, he will be.

Wilmington dropped wrestling and golf because they decided that more kids would come to the school to play lacrosse.

Let's contrast Wilmington with Mt Union. Mt Union hired Mark Hawald and backed the program. They've gone from 15-20 wrestlers and non-descript results to being a highly ranked squad with over 40 wrestlers in the room.

What a shame that Wilmington has taken the easy way out.
