Apparently, the concussion problem isn't going to go away. This is really unfortunate. A superbly talented kid is having his career cut short. Best of luck to him and may he find his niche in wrestling or another aspect of society.

It really is a bummer. He was still young and had a lot left to accomplish, but he made the most of the time that he did have. Hopefully he sticks around; he could be a great ambassador for UofM and wrestling in general. I could see him sliding in as a club coach or a director of operations somewhere.

I saw the tweet this morning from (I think) USAWrestling. I'm not sure if it was because it was early or I was in denial but in my head I was like, "What!? Do some fact checking next time. How could they get this THIS wrong?" Turns out - again - I'm the idiot and it is they who know what they are talking about.

On one level, you feel for the guy. Great athlete, terrific competitor, excellent representative for our nation.

On another level, you worry about concussions and what they do to a person. Yo lose and arm, your still - for the most part - the same guy. Same goes for a leg or a finger. You mix up your marbles and you are no longer who you thought you were.

Anywho, as someone mentioned above, I hope he can still stay involved in some way. Best of luck...

I wonder how many previous wrestlers/athletes have been forever changed for the worse before the increased awareness/vigilance concerning concussions in the past 4 years or so.

Sad to see any career end let alone somebody so young. So, despite me not wanting to see Lester lose, it was good providence for Dietrich to make the Olympic team in '08.

this may sound sappy, but i'll say it anyway...

my heart goes out to Jake. obviously my career wasnt a tenth of a percent as impressive as his, but i can completely empathize with doctors telling you that you need to hang it up due to concussion issues. going out on someone else's terms just sucks.

brain injuries are some of the most emotionally draining things that anyone has to deal with - and you cant just put a band-aid or a cast on it, or do some arthroscopic fix.

when you get a major headache out of the blue, when you cant ride amusement park rides anymore, when cant even do cartwheels and somersaults in the yard with your kids because of the dizzy/sick/lightheaded feeling...and on and on...there are many adjustments that you have to make, and it is truly hard to deal with.

certainly could be worse - so i am not complaining...i just hope that he gets the support that he needs, especially in the short term, to adjust to a the changes he will have to make to his life going forward...

Grant: Your post sounds heartfelt and based on personal experience. Thanks for sharing it.

U of Minn. has had one of the finest wrestling programs in the country for over a decade. Jake Deitchler was one of their biggest recruits and obviously an incredibly dedicated and driven young man. He deserved better and I wish him well as he moves forward with his life.

I really enjoyed watching his match with Alton in the early dual. He was as special wrestler in collegiate style as well. His scrambling ability and creative approach to wrestling would have made him a fan favorite for the next four years.
It is sad for a lot of reasons. He added a lot to the sport and only was able to compete for a small window of his adulthood. I hope that he finds something else that he is as passionate about as wrestling.

Quote from Rex Holman's post:

Being originally from MN, I followed his Olympic bid with special interest. In an interview he gave in '08, he said he was really excited about meeting Nastia Lukin (she was the blonde Olympic all-around Gynmastics gold medal winner). Not sure if he still has that "passion" but....
