I went to the Virginia Duals in 2009 and saw some great wrestling. Although the field is not as strong this year as it was in previous years, it still merits some web-viewing on Friday and Saturday. If things go as predicted, we will hopefully get to see Ian Miller and Mario Mason square-off against each other. I'm also hoping Kent State gets a rematch against Missouri as the Golden Flashes will be at full strength this time.

125 - Missed it, stupid work obligations...
133 - Woulda, coulda, shoulda - Mitcheff gave up a late TD after an extended scramble where several times he looked like he was going to get the TD. Frustrating.
141 - Small controlled the match; had a nice throw.
149 - Nasty pin by Miller but he injured his leg earlier in the match. He was limping quite a bit at the end.
157 - They played tag through 2 periods. Mallie rode him out in the 3rd for RT to go along with his escape in the 2nd.
165 - Ross Tice looked good in his return. Hit the tilt, of course, while controlling the match.
174 - BJ lost a close one to #14. Gave up 2 TDs. I think he has now wrestled about every wrestler ranked in the top 20...
184 - Newburg with the quick pin. Missed it because of work, AGAIN...
197 - Buckner almost with the win in place of Witt.
285 - Barlow loses to #26 in a match that wasn't as close as the score. He seems to struggle against the larger opponents. AA hopes fading?

Kent State defeated Buffalo 22-12

After 174, KSU was losing 12-11,dropped 3 straight - 157, 165, and 174.

125 pounds: Nic Bedelyon (Kent State) md. Sean Walton (Buffalo) 9-1
133 pounds: Justin Farmer (Buffalo) dec. Troy Opfer (Kent State) 3-0
141 pounds: Tyler Small (Kent State) dec. Kevin Smith (Buffalo) 3-2 TB2
149 pounds: Ian Miller (Kent State) md. Blake Roulo (Buffalo) 15-4
157 pounds: Wally Maziarz (Buffalo) dec. Mallie Shuster (Kent State) 9-7
165 pounds: Mark Lewandowski (Buffalo) dec. Ross Tice (Kent State) 1-0
174 pounds: Jake Waste (Buffalo) dec. Brandonn Johnson (Kent State) 5-1
184 pounds: Casey Newburg (Kent State) md. Zach Ward (Buffalo) 10-2
197 pounds: Ryan Buckner (Kent State) dec. Justin Heiserman (Buffalo) 3-1 SV
285 pounds: Brendan Barlow (Kent State) md. Jedd Mason (Buffalo) 12-2

125 - Missed it. Yes, work again
133 - Opfer loses a close one. Track Wrestling shows the score for 157 by mistake. Both of KSU's 133s are true 125s and it shows in the close matches.
141 - Match of the day and a preview of the MAC final. Each time it looked like Small was going to score, Smith fought back.
149 - Miller cruised and his leg seemed fine.
157 - Shuster gave up 5 early and ran out of time. On another day, Shuster wins. Still inconsistent.
165 - I think Tice wrestled better but #1 in the MAC did just enough to win.
174 - The sophomore slump for BJ continues. He couldn't get any offense going.
184 - It's good to see Newburg back. He's active and looking to score all 7 minutes. KSU needed a major and he delivered.
197 - Buckner grinds out a win.
285 - Will the real Brendan Barlow please stand up? Despite facing a much larger opponent, Barlow wrestled to his potential in this match. I hope this is the March version so he can AA.

Old Dominion beat Rutgers so no Miller-Mason. On the positive side, Coach Martin from ODU is fun to watch. Hopefully KSU gets revenge for their loss in 2009 to ODU.

The Flashes upset Missouri in the finals 18-14! It sure makes the Eds/Blair match not hurt so bad.

125 pounds: Alan Waters (Missouri) dec. Nic Bedelyon (Kent State) 7-5
133 pounds: Stevie Mitcheff (Kent State) dec. Eric Wilson (Missouri) 4-3
141 pounds: Tyler Small (Kent State) dec. Nicholas Hucke (Missouri) 5-0
149 pounds: Ian Miller (Kent State) dec. Kyle Bradley (Missouri) 7-3
157 pounds: Drake Houdashelt (Missouri) md. Mallie Shuster (Kent State) 13-4
165 pounds: Zach Toal (Missouri) dec. Ross Tice (Kent State) 5-4
174 pounds: Brandonn Johnson (Kent State) dec. Patrick Wright (Missouri) 4-1
184 pounds: Casey Newburg (Kent State) dec. Dorian Henderson (Missouri) 6-1
197 pounds: Brent Haynes (Missouri) md. Ryan Buckner (Kent State) 8-0
285 pounds: Brendan Barlow (Kent State) dec. Devin Mellon (Missouri) 3-2

125 - Nic wrestled much better against Waters this time, losing in OT. Great 7 plus minutes and a re-match in March would be a war.
133 - Despite getting ridden hard in the 2nd, Mitcheff fought off several strong attempts to turn him. With 2 TDs, he bested Wilson's 2 escapes and RT. Gutsy win for Stevie on a 2-0 day where KSU needed both of his wins.
141 - Small dominated the entire match and had 6 plus minutes of RT. #19 Hucke did NOTHING on bottom and I'm not sure why he wasn't hit with multiple stall calls when there were a lot of calls on the bottom man in earlier matches. The move to 141 is working out well.
149 - Miller with another solid win to go 4-0 in the tournament. He handled #12 Bradley to avenge his loss earlier in the year.
157 - Shuster had the first TD and the match was fairly close until Houdashelt hit a TD and 3 back points at the end of the match.
165 - Tice led throughout but gave up a TD with 10 seconds left. Up by 1, Tice couldn't finish on 2 shot attempts in the 3rd. Toal, however was able to convert. I imagine that Tice needs some more wrestling to have a full gas tank. Despite the loss, it's great to have him back in the line-up.
174 - What a great way to break out of a slump! BJ beats #10 Wright with KSU trailing 10-9. Down 1-0 at the end of 2. BJ starts down to start the 3rd, gets the reversal, along with 2 back points.
184 - Wrestling up against Newburg, Dorian Henderson can't generate any offense. Missouri's juggling its line-up didn't pay off.
197 - Although he couldn't match Witt's upset of Haynes, Buckner fought hard and didn't get embarrassed.
285 - Barlow wrestled to his potential and clinched the match, just like he did against ODU. He also got revenge for his earlier loss to Mellon.

Mizzou has had a 3 man rotation at 174-184 for the last two years. 3 guys that are virtually interchangeable (or at least that have flipped through the rotation as if the coaches think they are interchangeable): Dorian Henderson, Mike Larson, and Wright.
