The season is just beginning, but one thing that jumped out from early results was increases in the number of participants at, at least, two schools.

Glenville put 12 wresters on the mat in their 49-30 victory over Rhodes, who had 11 wrestlers going. In 9 contested bouts, Glenville won 6.

Similarly, East Tech had 12 wrestlers going in dropping a 45-27 decision to John Adams' 11 wrestlers. Adams took 7 of 10 contested bouts.

The early question is can anyone pose a challenge to defending champion Collinwood? It will take numbers to do it and 4 schools are, at this moment, meeting that part of the equation.

On the flip side, South had 6 wrestlers weigh-in against John Marshall, who had two.

A couple of notes:

1. Results above are "newspaper published" which will sometimes have errors.

2. I prefer to concentrate on "positives".

Glenville's coach, Greg Dotson, has always done a good job. Some years he's had more wrestlers than others but he's always got a few tough kids. Unfortunately, he usually gets his hands on them too late to get them to a level where anyone would really notice. Last year I watched them wrestle Cleve. Heights and he had a terrific 189. But it was obvious the kid didn't have the experience to qualify for state. But he had the talent.

Who's the head coach at John Marshall?

"Last year I watched them wrestle Cleve. Heights and he had a terrific 189."

That was Hassan Crutcher, MVP of the Senate tournament. He qualified for Mentor District but had trouble in third periods against the more skilled/experienced wrestlers he met. He saw almost no third periods, or even second periods, throughout last year.

Collinwood, with 7 to 10 competing, was in non-league duals this past week, winning some and losing some others (Maple and Euclid).

Regarding Crutcher--thanks for the info. Nice to see someone paying attention to these kids.

Several years ago Cleve JFK had an unreal talent at 189 (I want to say his name was Bruce Moore but am not sure) who also played football. I watched him work out at Shaker and it was obvious he didn't know how to push himself or he could have been state champ (2003-2004--somewhere around this time).

As long as Jay Hunt draws a breath, Collinwood will have some competitive wrestlers. Jay knows how to prepare kids.

Who's the coach at John Marshall?

Jay Hunt has had (at least) the last three Senate state placers I believe. I still think about the stunning sectional final upset when Myron Andrews beat the eventual state champ from Maple Heights. Erique Robinson. Andrews proved that was no accident by making the district finals and then placing 6th at state.

It's worth noting that when Iowa Central JC came to the Eds gym last month they had three local boys listed on their roster, though none saw action--Tim Peskar, Ahmad Motley, and Myron Andrews.

I figure the next Senate state champ will come from Collinwood, but who knows?

Steve: The greatest opportunity weight class is always 285. It's the one where experience means the least and size and athleticism can cause one to rapidly ascend to the tops of the ranks. In the early 1990's, Glenville's Mike Johnson came out of nowhere to emerge as a legit state champ contender. He was big, athletic and was a fantastic thrower. The next state champ from Cleveland will likely be a big man.

That could be Hank. Glenville's last state qualifier was Fred Johnson, also a 285, though the year he went, 2003, that bracket was really loaded.

Still, it was the following year that Collinwood had great prospects and it was in the lighter weights, Jay Hunt at 119 and David Armstrong at 125. I think both were district champs at Mass Perry. Both were definitely state champ caliber that year. Armstrong got off to a rough start against the Perrysburg 4 seed. Just one of those things.

Hunt was a bit unlucky that Ryan Smith and Andrew Perez were both out of the Perrysburg District meaning he would have had to face both to win it all. In the semifinals he lost to Smith in a great battle, 3-2. Smith claimed his second title over Perez in the final, with Hunt taking the third place podium spot.

Congratulations to Glenville who upended Collinwood 36 to 33 last night. I imagine that Collinwood had had a pretty long dual meet winning streak in the Senate.

In other action South beat JFK 24-18, John Adams beat East 48-24, and Lincoln-West topped John Marshall 30-12.
