I'm sure most of you are familiar with the story of wrestling legend Dave Schultz's untimely demise at the hands of John du Pont, as well as the fact that a movie is being made about the entire debacle. I saw a great deal of speculation about the content of the film on a large national forum, so I thought you all may be potentially interested as well.

I have read an early draft of the screenplay, and contrary to what has been said, rather than focusing on du Pont or Dave, the film focuses greatly on Mark Schultz (Olympic Champion, NCAA Champion, UFC participant, and giant badass) and his struggle with affording yet another Olympic run while being paid menial wages, as well as living in his brother's shadow.

As a student of film I am well aware that early drafts of a screenplay can differ substantially with what ultimately ends up on screen, so my interpretation may be null and void in a short few weeks. Having read what I have, however, I know this film can shed light on the plight of Olympic-level athletes who are not blessed with the comfort of massive sponsorship deals and financial security.

As I said before, the screenplay will be altered heavily by the time it reaches the screen, but I think it is a positive force in exposing the country to the struggle of wrestlers who are attempting to reach their ultimate goal.

Regardless of how the film plays out, one cannot minimize the fact that this all-Hollywood cast of writers, directors, and actors, will certainly give a great deal of exposure to the greatest sport in the world. (wrestling, by the way :) )
