Looks like Taylor is better suited for folk style. Dake dominated him. Impressive win.

Is it possible that Dake is just a better wrestler?

No argument with the notion that Dake may be better (and has been underrated for the last couple of years) but I also wouldn't draw too many conclusions based on this freestyle competition. I would agree that Dake is clearly the better freestyler. As to what would happen in folk, that match really gave no indication because the scoring would be remarkably different.

Taylor had a tough weekend and Dake did well. I also think that Taylor's style is not yet suited for freestyle. Indeed the PSU preps--Wright, Ruth and Taylor--who have been fabulous collegiately--were nothing more than modest participants at their respective weights.

I think the most obvious conclusion is that Freestyle ain't folkstyle.

And the "homer" in me will point out that Logan Stieber gave another fantastic performance for a young man who just finished his second year of school. He is very good regardless of style.

Stieber, Howe and Dake all seem well adjusted to both types of wrestling.

And Harry Lester just might be the best Ohio prep of them all. He can do any style at an incredible level.

...oh contrare-- that broomstick move Dake used with his leg in air to whip Taylor to his back would work in any style, certainly in folkstyle, reminiscent of Johnny Thompson.

..Dake moved up a wt and still looked the stronger guy.

...Dake, btw, is son of former Ohio state champ Doug Dake of Westlake high school, 175 lb, 1980.

...no sin in being wrong Rob Wagner, some actually thought Marsteller would dominate his FILA Jrs weight class.

...on another matter Rob, your marraige to Natalie Wood makes u the envy of all men. ...s/BobP

She was a hottie.

There is something very special about Dake, much like I feel there is about Logan. I just don't think Dake can let himself consider losing. His confidence is always sky-high and he is always in solid position.

I hope he is at 165 with Taylor and perhaps Howe and Caldwell.

And Phillips. . .

I love that Dake beat Taylor. Now in saying that, I am more of a Taylor fan, but D.T. needed that (and so did Dake). It certainly gives D.T. some food for thought as he moves into his offseason training.

And who was it during Nationals that implied that Dake was the most likely to not win another title this year? I bet that assertion (I hate auto correct) ain't made again ;) Anyway, love to see them both compete. And one thing D.T. knows for sure, to be the best you have to beat the best. D.T. now knows that there is someone out there that can keep him from being a 3xer, and that might be just what he needed to keep him from being ho hum about his training. I hope we get to see this match again. And I cannot even imagine which way it will go in the future. Kudos to both of them.

u must mean moi? -- well i think what i said was close to these words: "the odds are against Dake winning 3 NCAA titles in a row all at different wts" which was a very True statement at the time since it had Never been down before.

didnt say Dake couldnt do it, but he did beat long odds, thats fact. s/BobP

it was me, Patrick, i recall posting it, i will not deny my utterances-- Dake made history, won 3 in a row all at different wts..

he could REALLY make history if he won 4 in a row all at different wts ??!!

he impressed me, thats for sure. Stunned me really.

i am proud of geting one thing right though, 4 years ago on Am Wr News Senior AA team, we picked NY 2X state champ Dake for FIRST team over the favorite at the time Collin Palmer. s/BobP

"call of the century" actually, ha, ha-- more to editor Ron Good's influence than mine, he talked to Rob Koll and was sold on how Dake would start and be good his true freshman year. --Koll was right.

Koll has been right about alot of things, witness 3 NCAA champs---- no one was talking Simaz and esp Bosak as NCAA champs coming out of high school, in fact Bosak was NEVER a PA state champ.

Bob: That broomstick was slick but in actuality Dake never had "folkstyle control" even as the touch fall was called. And when he threw Taylor with double unders, it was Taylor that actually came out on top. In folk, Dake might have ended up with nothing from either position if Taylor scrambles out. Then again, I'm not discounting that Dake reacted differently in these situations because it was freestyle.

I'm not a Taylor apologist. And I've always thought Dake was underrated. I'm just not prepared to say that I know what will happen if they meet next season.

I would favor Dake...slightly.

your usual keen analysis noted, Hank.

heres one for you- Patrick u heard it here for posterity sake- rub a habeneros pepper in my face if i'm wrong:

i think DAKE WILL MOVE UP to 165, that means he's got the biggest (matzo) BALLS of all time, risking his 4th title.

if he could win it vs Taylor and Howe, to me that would contend Dake for the #1 college wrestler of all time-- 4 titles at 4 different wts-- at the highly contested middle wts, are u kidding me!!??

Dake just too strong for Taylor right now, i don't know where that kind of strength comes from? not from lifting wts or kettleballs thats for sure. HOWEVER Howe and Dake will have to contend with Taylor on top at NCAA, VERY tough task, edge Taylor?

as is think of the super College (not freestyle) 158s of all time, where does Dake stand? cannot say but is he in their company?? Jim Zalesky, Joe Williams, Pat Smith, Lee Kemp. s/BobP

I'd love for Dake to move up. Patrick...I'm ignoring the "matzo balls" comment so as not to encourage you to make more bad puns.

In terms of size, Dake looks thicker than Taylor.

Mike R--I loved your comments on themat and thought you nailed down the situation. I don't disagree with anything you wrote. I'm just splitting hairs with my take on all of it.
