Discussion Topic: Bring back school rivalries

Back in the glory days, schools would compete against a league rival in basketball, wrestling and football, all the same weekend. Students were more involved cheering on their team to beat the other team. They would come to the meets. Now of days the only ones coming are a few parents and other wrestlers. Although wrestling has other merits, it's not enough excitement to cause a roar in the community.
High transportation costs and the lack of promotion caused this apathy.

It seems like wrestling and football the same weekend would be a little difficult given they are played in different seasons. I understand people are not drawn out of the community to watch wrestling as much as football or even basketball but the attendance numbers probably represent the sport as a whole across the country. People don't understand wrestling like they do football or basketball. I will say that I've been up to Graham to watch Graham vs. St. Eds over the years and they don't seem to have any issue drawing a crowd. I know that is the exception but I live in Dayton and have been out to watch some of the better duals in this area and the attendance is pretty good around here. I can't speak for other areas around the state.

I'm not sure if it's still going on because my kids graduated and I moved. But just a few short years ago Franklin and Carlisle had a fantastic dual meet. They competed for a wooden barrel which was wheeled onto the center of the mat before the meet began. Kids from both schools packed whichever gym it was at each year. I remember in 2005 having to park a block away and walk to the gym. Kids had tie dyed shirts and placards and cheers...It was great. Like I said, don't know if they still do it, but if they do and you live in the area, check it out. You will be impressed at the crowd two small schools can draw.
