This seems to be a recurring problem at PSU. First Andrew Long, then Ed Ruth, and now the Altons...
A wrestler has to answer for their actions off the mat and it's a real shame that all of this negative publicity is being directed towards quality coaches and a great program.

certainly not defending the actions at all...just a theoretical question that probably cant be answered...
i wonder how many student athletes get busted for this kind of thing in college every day, that the media doesnt cover? is it just that PSU is currently the national powerhouse that they are, and these two happen to be nationally ranked that we hear about it?
again - not a defense...just wonder how many trees fall that we don't hear...

Bob: Just read Greg Allman's autobiography--My Cross To Bear--and you're massively understating. Incredible band that probably would have made a lot more great music if they weren't constantly stoned out of their minds.
Funny joke by the way.
As far as the Alton's go, I think it's one of those live and learn things. Unless this type of incident recurs, it doesn't seem like too big a deal.

To me the article seemed to treat it as "just another event" that the writed or editor would fill some space with.
The other stories didn't seem interesting just as the write up for this incident didn't seem interesting. Sort of a ho-hum attitude... Not finger pointing or trying to slay the giant type of writing.

Unlike the Allman Bros., these "Midnight Riders" got caught.
To Grant's point, I have always read about local papers reporting these types of things about local D-1 athletes. The internet just allows the article to go viral with a push of a button. I doubt many non-wreslting fans even read it.
It would be nice if 18+ year olds could be taught to understand the gifts they get with these academic and athletic opportunities but some learn later than others.

I see neither Alton wrestled at the Southern Scuffle. Wonder what their status is?

The speculation on the TOM/AWN blog is that they will probably get 1 month suspensions each. Their backups seem to be doing fair at the scuffle.
And, with that schedule, they would be back on the team long before they come to Columbus.
The statement on TOM was that Cael made them come to the meet, and weigh-in and make weight, but they couldn't wrestle!

Alton's dad got hot under the collar after reading the usual nonsense posted on themat.com by ignorant posters. Here are his comments:
"My boys are not going anywhere. The powers that be (National Champ coaches and Olympic Gold Medalist) have made peace with this and set some strict rules along with a punishment beyond what you see or hear - they are being punished beyond what you know. My boys have their work cut out for them now - trust me... They have to abide or they are done completely and no transfer will be allowed. They love Cael, Cody and Casey and know they let everyone down. But if I could tell everyone here the true story I guarantee they would be astonished as to how this has happened. It has been blown way out of proportion. They were warned previously about this trouble and the female involved. I think now they understand there are consequences to be dealt with. I wish so bad I was back in LBNY and not in this small town..... But there GPA is pretty good lu-alum so I don't know who you are - like most you hide behind an internet name and cower as a coward does when laying blame and insults on two young boys who have done so much community service and help with special olympics, visited sick kids in the hospital and done many clinics for free at youth clubs. Why do so many in our sport hate when we are struggling a great deal on a collegiate level. I can only think but one thing - YOU HAVE NO IDEA AT ALL ABOUT THIS SPORT AND THE GREAT PEOPLE INVOLVED AT ALL LEVELS. Go ahead now and attack back - but I dare you to email your real name and address at altonmortgage@gmail.com Maybe then we can discuss this matter face to face at some wrestling tournament in the future."

Going to the internet/social media is never the answer in these situations. I understand that there is probably more to the situation, but if you can only give a partial account of the situation, what good are you truly doing for your sons? In accordance with that line of thinking, how ill-advised is it to post your email address in a not-so-veiled attempt to elicit a confrontation?
Maybe if my child were in that situation I would feel and act differently, but I don't think that going to the message boards is the way to put out the flames of ignorance. That particular message board is what it is. You are not going to change it with a post of that nature.

I agree, if you want to hide behind a username and talk negatively about two really great college athletes who will both be multiple AA's by the time their done, probaly should just ignore it. People like that are not worth it. Still respect what he did for his boys though.

Mr. Alton... *their GPA...
Whatevs.
I said it earlier... Doesn't affect me, and my guess is it's less a deal to the Alton's at this point.
This is (hopefully) a blip on "there" life's radar.
Discussion boards, however, see this as telling of "they're" entire existence.

Brad:
I agree as well, so you are the man.
I understand how parents are inclined to come to the defense of their children (could be a full-time job on my end, as my four year old often greets me at the front door with "Daddy, I didn't do it," usually after pushing, biting, and/or spitting at one of his pre-schoolmates).
But in fore/hindsight, it's usually best to just let this go.
Or at a minimum, at least be a bit wiser with your words - e.g., when your boys are alleged to have been involved in some sort of physical altercation, I'm not sure it makes a whole heck of a lot of sense to impliedly challenge a fellow poster, anonymous or otherwise, to a "face to face". (Apple/tree?)
Mark:
On that end, you'd best not check/correct this for misspellings or other typos; otherwise, I may well challenge you to a duel :).
