Discussion Topic: McDonough vs. Delgado
Eric Jaynes added to this discussion on February 9, 2013

Was wondering if anybody watched this match last night. I was very impressed with Delgado's ability to get in deep and finish his takedowns. Not sure if McDonough was just having an off night, but Delgado has beaten him twice now and he really looks to be the better of the two. After watching Megaludis wrestle McDonough so close and then his loss last night, I am really starting to doubt he wins it this year. Then again, he's been there before and knows how to win the important matches. Any thoughts?

Delgado just has McDonough figured out. It was a great match last night if you are a Delgado fan. He was all over McDonough from the whistle. He had to have been in on McDonough with shots 6 or 7 times. McDonough is tough to finish on, but Delgado worked his way around on him 3 times and had a reversal on him.

McDonough & Megaludis have always been close matches. I doubt anyone other than Megaludis or Delgado beats McDonough. I did not see Megaludis/Delgado. Megaludis pinned Delgado late, but I don't know any of the other details.

Seems like Delgado would hope to be in the same half of the bracket with McDonough at the NCAAs and face Megaludis in the finals. B1Gs will be fun as well!

If McDonough gets past the quarters at NCAAs he'll be fine. By the finals he'll be hydrated, over 140, and very tough to beat.

Agreed with Patrick, Delgado knows McD and his style. I was amazed how Delgado was getting in on his shots with ease, and I really think he could of had 1 or 2 more takedowns if he wanted too. It is hard to tell if McD was having an off night or not, he doesn't show any emotion and keeps the same look on his face the entire match.

I am looking forward to a rematch at Big Tens and or NCAA's and hope for the same result..... All that tape McD keeps on his head gear (probably the same tape for years) grosses me out.

I was thinking something similar to Mike R. We've all seen/experienced the dual vs tournament phenomenon as related to weight. Perhaps McD was not quite at his best or as quick as he typically might have been when fully hydrated. Who knows?
Let's say McD wins out through the B1G tournament. Barring any changes in the ACC/Big 12 tourneys (if that is where Mizzou is competing), you'd have to see Delgado as a #4 or #5 seed behind McD, Mego, Waters, and Garnett. We might see a Delgado/McD rematch in the NCAA semis because I don't see the coaches placing McD any lower than 1st at the B1G even if he did just lose to Delgado. Guess our questions will be answered then.

I thought Jordan Oliver would be unbeatable in the finals last year for the same reason.

Delgado matches up well with McD (although McD did beat him a couple times last year too). Mega can beat Delgado.

Throw in Waters and Garnett and you've got a really interesting weight class.

Your champion--a redhot Nikko Triggas?

Delgado was beating Megaludis last week 3-2 late in the third when they got in a scramble and Megaludis came up with the fall. I do agree Mcdonugh is better in a tournament then a dual.

Side note anyone see that scramble from the Illinois 149 that was awesome.

Is that the one that was the whole first period?

Thanks for the info on the Megaludis/Delgado match. That makes it all more interesting.

That scramble at 149 was crazy. Across the board, Illinois has a nice team and a ton of potential.
