Discussion Topic: good idea or not?
Bob Preusse added to this discussion on March 13, 2013

NCAA has revealed that the finals will begin with the 174 pound weight class, and progress in order, ending on the 165 lb class so the viewers can witness possible history.

imo, its disrespectful to the others at 165 to just assume the finals will be dake/taylor. And will this influence a ref's call leading up to the 165 finals?

of course wrestling is trying to be more so into the entertainent business, rightfully so i undersand that, but is this a good idea? opinions? ..s/BobP

Your point is valid. Anything can happen. Isn't it just as disrespectful to D.T. by mentioning "possible history" as their reason? But let's face it...one of the other 165s better bring a gun if they're going to keep the finals from being between those 2. They should have just said it was randomly selected and this is how is shook out. For me, seeing it last does not make it any better. Heck, have them wrestle 1st. Let's see this thing.

Similar to Pat, I think it could have been handled diffently. Talk about some of the options...

A) keep it as is
B) looking to change things up but randomly drawing weights throughout the night.
C) might go 285 and down this year
All so they could secretly have...
D) based on the field of 20 finalists and the match-ups they bring, we have decided - now that the field is set - to start at 174.

In the end, it just means Ben Golden is going to have to wait for my #GloatFest!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they should have waited until after the semifinals to announce the order in which they would be wrestling the finals. At that point, citing "possible history" would have been fine and it doesn't set you up for embarassment if something happens along the way to Dake that takes him out of the running for his 4th title (i.e. injury, fluke pin, etc).

I'm a traditionalist. Start at 125.

I'm a traditionalist, as well as a KSU homer. Is it too much to ask for a Marsh pin of Dake in the opening round? Wouldn't that screw up the plans!

I understand the interest in marketing a Dake v Taylor matchup....as well as Kilgore v Wright, Stieber v Ramos and Stieber v Maple. All could happen and are amazing to contemplate.

But...let's say that ESPN pours on the marketing of the potential matchup. What happens if one loses?

Please, don't say it couldn't. Incredible wrestlers have inexplicable losses. It can happen.

What then?

It's a quandary.

I love the idea. Let's face it - the sport needs marketing and creativity to attract fans.

However, revealing it before hand was a mistake. They should have waited until the semis were complete.

Bob - is that how you do it at the Ironman?

I'm not hating on them for trying something different, though.

I have been in sales for my entire adult life, so believe me when I say, that some Herb Tarlek in the ESPN sales department came up with this.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but a true wrestling fan did not dream this up!

While I don't care what the NCAA does, I can tell you what happens for the Brecksville Tournament.

Of course everyone has an idea what the "big" match up should be prior to the start of wrestling. However, as often as not, the anticipated match up doesn't occur as one contestant has stumbled along the way.

For this reason, the "feature" match up (and the last to be wrestled) in NEVER known before the semis are finished. I know this to be fact since I have to create the matrix for the officials to work the finals and I get the final word from our director and/or Josh Lowe. They are the two people who decide what should be the most interesting match up. Truthfully, even then it doesn't always work out but that is the nature of the sport.

Bob does the ironman start at 106 every year? Or do they leave the supposed best match for last?

Everyone complains that there is no one around to watch 285 and now you will have the place packed till the end, speaking for someone going to be there in peron I think this is awesome.

True wrestling fans see the value in all of the weight classes, and look forward to huge match-ups in all of those classes.

The marketing aspect is reaching for those fringe fans that buy into the hype of that one match. The true fans know the value is in every match in the finals.

I have to agree that I would feel better about that situation if that class was chosen as a blind draw instead of a marketing ploy, but what the heck, if it can bring in a few more fans to the 'hidden secret' that is NCAA wrestling, then it is for the better!

In defense of that decision, I think that I have read that at the last tournament that they wrestled at, that the gym cleared out after their match, and the last few classes were performing in front of a nearly empty gym. - If that is indeed the case, then maybe it is better to have it last so that the crowd stays to the end!

The only way Dake or Taylor loses to any of the competition prior too the finals is maybe 5% at most. Maybe a illegal slam or skin infection! Its not disrespectful at all!!Dake is chasing history regardless, You guys just have to wait like the rest of us!!!
