there's drawbacks with H of F ohio chapter--- one being if u look at 3 categories to get inducted, Medal of Courage will be rare, so its either Lifetime Service or Outstanding American.

Meaning, realistically, only very successful coaches can get in or great wrestlers who later gained fame in politics or business.

Example, here's a guy should be in, but there's no category for him, Greg Wojciechowski:

Wojo’s Legend
The Toledo Blade recently recalled Wojo as he was known; he weighed in at about 245 and was a two-time state champ in 1967 and 1968. By the end of his sophomore year at Whitmer, Wojo was already an accomplished wrestler and power lifter thanks to his training at Dick Torio's Health Club.

Torio himself is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an official and was named the Outstanding Official at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Torio was assistant coach to another Hall of Famer at the University of Toledo, Distinguished Member Joe Scalzo who brought the World Cup to the United States.

Wojciechowski was the 1971 NCAA heavyweight champion to go with national runner-up finishes in 1970 and '72 while at the University of Toledo (freshmen couldn’t compete then.). As a small heavyweight the 6 foot, 260 pound Wojo competed in college and AAU in the “unlimited era” against some of the all-time greatest big men ever: Jess Lewis, Chris Taylor, Jimmy Jackson and Bruce Baumgartener.

Over the years he collected 13 national titles on the mats. In 1972 Wojciechowski came in second for the Olympic team spot in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman heavyweight divisions to his collegiate rival, Iowa State's Chris Taylor who weighed well over 400 pounds.

Wojo was the Olympic alternate in 1968, 1972 and 1976 before making the Olympic team in 1980. Sadly, the 1980 team is the one that will go down in history because President Jimmy Carter would not let America compete in the Moscow Olympics that year. In 1980 Wojciechowski nailed down that position by beating two formidable foes, 1976 Olympian Jimmy Jackson of Oklahoma State and eventual four-time Olympian Bruce Baumgartner.

The Toledo Blade reported, “Say the name, ‘Wojo’ around Toledo and folks of several generations will identify in their minds the image of the barrel-chested wrestler with the shaved head and menacing Fu-Manchu-framed scowl. This would be the look of Wojciechowski's latter years in pro wrestling with the World Wrestling Association in Indianapolis, during his 12-year run as The Great Wojo.” Wojo coached and retired from teaching at Toledo Libbey high school, he resides in Toledo today where he will not be forgotten.

another problem, the Ohio chapter of the national Hall of Fame has only existed TWO years, so only a handful of men have been inducted -- Lifetime Service and Outstanding American about 7 per year combined-- leaving many who are very deserving on the outside looking in.

in my opinion, the first 3 years the H of F should have brought in at least 12 a year --combining oldtimers with still living inductees -- in order to get up to speed.

as it is, true giants aren't in yet and wont get in for many years if at all because they are long since dead and forgotten now.

no one i have talked to knows who the officers of the Ohio chapter are or how anything is decided. ...s/BobP

Can anyone say that Jeff Jordan doesn't belong on that list for Outstanding Lifetime Service.

The job that he has done putting the rural area of St. Paris on the national high school wrestling map!

Mr. Bird who do you think would be best to fill out the form for Coach Hunter?

Tim I know you didn't ask me but I think Mr. Bird should fill it out since he coached with Mr. Hunter.

I would be glad to start the process but I feel a lot of the input should come from the members of the of the 1990 St. Joe State Championship Team. All (or most all) of their team points were scored by West End Y Alumni such as Bill Splete and others.

I have no skin in this but I want to commend you all on this thread. This right here is a portrait of the bond wrestling creates. Not sure there is any other sport, and maybe no other organization/activity period that builds lifelong camaraderie the way wrestling does. Good stuff!

Thanks Joe, Now that we have Mr. Bird moving on this things should start happening. I also sent Bill Splete a Message, hopefully he can get the input of some of the past West End/St. Joe's guys. All you would need to do is take a picture of the Wall of Fame at West End with all the guys that won/placed at state!
