Discussion Topic: Colt Sponseller lost?
Doug Noel added to this discussion on January 13, 2008

Several websites have Colt wrestling 174 and losing (C. Mich, tOSU) is this true? Still trying to catch up from 1st day's dual. Thanks

No, Colt is still undefeated. They have Colt Sponseller and Alex Picazo's names switched on the results you've seen. Notice the weight class difference...

In some reports it also had Pucillo winning 4-1 against Northwestern, when if fact, he pinned the kid, putting the match pretty much out of reach unless Fox teched or pinned Bergman, which wasn't going to happen.

Would like definitive word on this, since the OSU website still has the story as Picazo winning at 165 (including photo).

Sponseller is still undefeated trust me on that one. Picazo would have to cut down a heck of a lot to make 165.

Steve: What I said is definitive. <thumbsup>

Colt didn't lose and Picazo will never be at 165.

Picazo hasn't wrestled under 171 since his sophomore year of HS, amputation would be the only way.

I've got my reporter cap on. I want sources and confirmation from those sources.

We have the OSU website as a source and the Live Text from InterMat as another source. They conflict.

Otherwise we have very reasonsble assertions about Picazo's weight. Very reasonble, but that's not a SOURCE!

Sorry to be a pain.

Steve:
The reporter that stated Picazo went 165 was P. Galbincea. Does that allay your fears?

InterMat has made the correction

165: Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) dec. David Rella (Penn State) 9-5
165: Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) dec. Anthony Tortora (Hofstra) 13-3
165: Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) dec. Dominic Marella (Northwestern) 6-4
165: Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) dec. Donnie Jones (West Virginia) 14-9
165: Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) dec. Brandon Carter (Central Michigan) 11-5

Interesting Ohio State still only has Pucillo as undefeated so we still do not know actually.

Central Michigan web site has it

Quote:

"165: Alex Picazo (OSU) WBD Brandon Carter (CMU) D 11-5
174: No. 3 Brandon Sinnott (CMU) WBD Colt Sponseller (OSU) D 7-2"

You know, guys, this is how the whole weapons of mass destruction thing got started. Some guy said Iran had weapons but wrote Iraq by mistake. next think you know, everyone kept reporting it. It became fact. And now we own the whole sh-tty country.

I'm kidding--but not really.

Trust me...the wrong result got reported and it keeps getting reported. Picazo is killing himself just to get to 174. His legs alone weigh 165. Have you seen them? They're tree trunks.

I knew that the report of Sponseller and Picazo switching weights for the Central Michigan dual was wrong because the account further strained my credulity by asking me to believe that Picazo actually won a match against a Division I wrestler. <crazy>

Why would someone come onto a Sponseller thread just after registering and with his first post lie to defame a 4 year letterman 5th year senior of Ohio State and then use words like credibility in an arrogant form when his credibility is empty just like his profile he entered - zip - doubt very much if the name is correct and for sure he has a personal agenda.

Alex has beat some highly ranked wrestlers over the years at 184. This year at 174 he is 4-1 to Div I prior to the 2 day duals:

174: Alex Picazo (Ohio State) dec. Justin Peterson (Wisconsin) 12-7
174: Alex Picazo (Ohio State) dec. Mike Whalen (Rutgers) 6-1
174: Alex Picazo (Ohio State) md. Kent Smith (Ohio) 8-0
174: Alex Picazo (Ohio State) dec. Chris Estep (Kent State) 10-5

So Miller, if indeed that is your name, you are using the WBD technique. The '08 losses by Alex were in one weekend which who knows what was going on with illness, injury, weight lost, travel during those 2 days - Ohio State surely does not update us to such situations but I would guess there was a particular problem this weekend especially if you saw his win in St. John over Wisconsin.
