Chris Semary, Cleveland West Tech, passed away last week. State runnerup at 155 pounds to Steve Reedy in 1977. Chris' father Pat long time asst & head coach at Valley Forge and Parma high schools.
i have a soft spot for the oldtime Cleveland neighborhood kids-- West Tech, West high, John Marshall---
that small triangle only 20 square miles probably formed AS DEEP a high school talent pool as any locale its size, EVER, in this nation 1930s thru the 1970s. Later many of them fed the great St Eds teams.
AWN writer Jim Kalin, formerly of Strongsville, now of LA, fondly recalls competing against Semary, a guy that Kalin says "had a big aura". ....s/BobP

i remember chris competing in the 1976 olympic trials when they were in cleveland. he was still in high school, but he entered anyway. i was on the floor walking around the old public arena, and there was chris, grinning and just having a ball being part of the try-outs. obviously he didn't win, but i'm sure he dealt out some punishment. there were very few guys more tough than chris semary. whatever he lacked in shape or skill he made up for in guts. a pure warrior.

semary lost to steve reedy in 1977 state finals at 155. reedy had appeared in finals as a sophomore only to lose to wrestling great mike deanna. reedy was third his junior year, and he defeated semary 4-2 for title. i'm sure reedy wondered at some moment whether he was going to get his title. semary was a bruiser. nobody could brawl like him. reedy sure did deserve that title, and worked for it.

great old names appearing here-- reminds me 1981 NCAA 167 pounds, 3 ohioans in what is considered one of the most loaded wts ever in NCAA hisotry.
Mark Schultz beats MIKE DeANNA in finals, for 5th place JAMIE MIKOVICH beats STEVE REEDY. 4 past or future NCAA champs were in the top 8 incl defending champ Matt Reiss who took 8th and future OW Mike Sheets 7th. Perry Hummel took 4th.
DeANNA from Bay Village considered by many the best to Never win a title. Certainly he was a better wrestler than many who did, but had bad luck of being in with all-time greats Mark Schultz and Mark Churrella.
some questioned whether theres any luck involved in winning a title, well who u r bracketed with is surely good or bad luck in many cases. ...s/BobP

One of the most important factors in winning a championship is the caliber of competition you face. If your field is loaded--or there's a legendary performer at your weight like a Logan Stieber or a Mark Churella--it has a big impact.
Is luck a factor? If one defines luck as encompassing the difficulty of a given weight class, then yes.

Was this the same guy that was the only wrestler for his team and he travelled to all of the different HS in Cleveland for practice?
