Discussion Topic: Some thoughts on the Bill Dies Memorial Tournament
Pat Costilow added to this discussion on January 20, 2008

I copied these as written off what I posted on Yappi, multiple posts so it may seem somewhat disjointed.

Great tournament, I thoroughly enjoyed my first Dies. The lasting impression I carry is how much of a "feel good" vibe there was throughout this tournament. The entire Akron community comes together and runs this tournament very well. It really is an awesome experience. I believe it was the Spicel and Sheppard match... 3 OT's, nailbiter match, and when Spicel won, he and Sheppard shook hands and hugged, twice, lot of good sportsmanship here.

The telecast went great. It will be on NEON, Northeast Ohio Network, Time Warner channel 15 in Cleveland, 22? in the rest of the coverage area on the next two weekends, 10 AM Saturday, 5 PM Sunday. All the finals matches are covered (first place, third place, and fifth place), and I did interviews with Lee Thompson, head coach at tournament runners up Kenmore, Mark Savoia, head coach at tournament champs Medina Highland, tournament 112 champ Bart Young, and Highland's Tyler Houska, whose third place win sealed the team title for Highland.

Lee Thompson, what this guy has done at Kenmore cannot be overstated, and he is exceptionally humble. He is my vote for DI coach of the year. Mark Savoia was also a very nice guy who gave a good interview, I think the interviews will end up being the best part of the telecast, everybody I talked to gave really interesting answers. Thompson talked about the conversation he had with Cody Lamberg about staying at Kenmore as opposed to going private after Lamberg won a junior high state title, good stuff there.

Also, the team race was awesome. I believe there were three lead changes during the finals. Before the finals started, Highland was in third, with Waynedale leading and Kenmore in second. It looked like it was all going to come down to 189 between Neff and Lamberg, but Highland got it done, 5-0 in finals matches. Congrats to Savoia.

Another thing that has worked in their favor is that a lot of the talented youngsters that have come up, Garland McCormick, Jamar Sheppard, guys like that, have been, weightwise, very close to the established veterans who have gotten it done, Chapman and William Sheppard (who is nasty dangerous). They had four in a row in the finals, something remarkeable for a tough tourney like this.

Waynedale kind of choked. When you have defending state champ Stiltner and state 3rd Neff lose, you lost it for yourself.

Another thing about Kenmore. We got all the bio sheets the wrestlers filled out after the semi's and consi's. Every Kenmore wrestler, all seven who placed, on their sheets, and the bottom, or, in Garland McCormick's case, the bottom of the page and half of the back of the page as well, wrote a note saying how much they wanted to thank the coaches for their care and dedication, their parents for being supportive, and their drill partners. These seem to be a very polite, well mannered, and respectful group of kids. Coming out of a somewhat inner city school, this is another thing for which Thompson and his staff should be commended.

Special mention to Murray, the 285 from Norwayne. Unseeded, and pins his way through the tourney.

The broadcast will be shown on NEON, Northeast Ohio Network, Time Warner Public Access, channel 15 in Cleveland, and I think 16 or 22 in Akron, Youngstown, Medina, and the rest of that coverage area.

The telecast is three hours long. We hit mostly the 1st place matches, but also some of the 3rd and 5th.

Interviews after with Kenmore head coach Lee Thompson, Highland coach Mark Savoia, 112 champ from Highland Bart Young, and 215 3rd placer from Highland Tyler Houska. Houska needed bonus points in his 3rd place match to win the title for Highland, and got a first period pin.

Lee Thompson was an awesome interviewee. I am officially a fan of him and Kenmore.
