Ohio Tournament of Champions

New for 2008 - Freestyle & Open Divisions

More than 3000 wrestlers, ages 5-50 and representing more than 30 states, are expected to compete in the Ohio Tournament of Champions, scheduled for April 26, at the Columbus Convention Center, in Columbus,OH. Now in its 16th year, this event is the largest one day amateur wrestling tournament in the world.

This year, the tournament has added two new age divisions. First, a combined Cadet/Elite (high school age) freestyle division. Wrestlers in both the Cadet and Elite Division will now have their option of competing in the modified folkstyle, or in the modified freestyle event. The Cade/Elite Division is for those wrestlers that were born in 1993 or later and have not yet graduated high school.

The freestyle event will be run with a similar style (1 three minute period and a 10 point tech fall), but with freestyle scoring. Freestyle officials will be brought in to officiate this age division. Wrestlers competing in the freestyle division do not require any pre qualification to compete.

The second new division is an Open Division, for all post high school wrestlers. This division will be run with the regular modifications that the majority of the event runs with and will feature a lower entry fee than normal.

Entry fee for the Ohio TofC remains at $60, with additional family members costing only $40 (Open Divison is $40). The event also still features:

FREE ADMISSION for all spectators
NO coaching passes required
FREE event program and souvenir lapel pin
FREE morning wrestling clinic
SPECIAL guest celebrities and FREE autographs

For the most part, placing top three at any TofC qualifier would allow a wrestler to participate in this event. Other ways to qualify include winning a certain number of matches during the current season or taking first place at any organized wrestling event, other than those conducted specificially for first year wrestlers, during the current season.

For a complete list of qualifying information and exemptions, go to www.ohiotofc.com and click on “Qualifying Events” on the bottom right side. To begin the registration processs, you can visit the same site and click on “Registration” on the left side.

Special guests scheduled to appear include Olympic and NCAA Champions, as well as some of the kids from the CBS show “Kid Nation.”

Ohio Tournament of Champions features the following age groups:

Bantam: born 2000 and later
Midget: Born 1998-1999
Junior: Born 1996-1997
Schoolboy: Born 1994-1995
