Some commentary:

Taylor's in a loaded pool - already had to beat Young and Rupp in just three matches. Young, a PA champ, had Taylor and Rupp (OK state champ) in his first two matches and lost both. He's got Futrell next but still is in very good shape to take gold.

Also at 105, you have Toth who could back into an AA from the weaker side. Minnard is battling hard in Taylor's pool at 2-1.

Sergent suffered what has to be considered a tough loss to Thorn, and a bad one to some extent. The problem becomes that Sergent probably draws Butler in round six (after the opening round Thursday). On the other hand, Mitcheff is in very good position in the other pool.

Inghram is battling well at 119#, though his run probably ends with Spjut his next opponent. Zamaria is beat opponents he should beat (plus the quality win over Forrest) and racking up those bonus points; however, he has Hunter in the morning. Those bonus points could be key if he loses two here and needs a tiebreaker. From the other side, Neibert is in good position to AA. Despite facing Triggas next round, he should have an imminently beatable opponent the round after that.

Harris had the tough loss to Craig Wilson. Projecting out beyond the next match that he should win, it is hard to say if it's going to be favorable or unfavorable in terms of an AA.

Dong is doing well at 4-0 in the 145 class. Regula has a quality win over NHSCA Srs AA Lucas Murray, lost to Larsen, and now has Ramos IL. It's too early to read AA tea leaves in that loaded pool with Mason, White, Nay, and Accordino there as well for sure.

Cubberly is 4-0 including avenging a GR loss to Meza. After this first match of the AM, the path probably gets tougher starting with a projected match against Andrew Howe IN. Chris Kline is 4-0 in the pool as well, and if he can win one (or both) of his next two matches, could get the bye to really help him. Quality win over Kellogg.
On the other side, Goins beat defending Cadet champ Sheridan (who promptly lost to Weatherman after that and was eliminated) before losing to Weatherman and is 3-1. Brutal match in the AM against Polz (IL state champ). Moore is flowing along at 4-0 and might be the favorite to win what is clearly the thinner side at 152.

Wilson is trying to navigate the top side of the 160 landmine. Beat Condon, lost to Hatchett. Going to be tough to AA with that loss.
Hardy has his landmine side to battle as well, already has lost to NHSCA Sr AA Lower, his only tough opponent to date. After this next match, one could project a meeting with Bullins NC, a very tough opponent.

Magrum got the much weaker side at 189 and hopefully can capitalize an AA out of it.

Snyder is trying to capitalize again upon a good position and a thinner side, though the clear ace (Platt) is on that side. He's lost already but there's only 8 left in his pool.
Scales is undefeated but has Mahan next. Tumlin lost to McFarland early but has won three since and could do some things. Both have a shot at AA - nothing too sure.

Heavy is an absolute landmine. Powell went 2-2 but lost to super tough opponents in Owens (three periods) and Madison (2-0/1-0). Cam Wade has Madison this coming round, Wade won their meeting last year in Fargo. After losing 1-0/1-0 in the opener to Thompson IA, Barlow has won three straight. I think one of them can AA - hopefully both, but that's pushing it.
On the other side, Hiles was upset early and has recovered with three wins since. Kuhar is also 3-1 losing to Lane. Both wrestlers have winnable next matches. I think one could AA, but probably not both (more likely 0 than 2, way)

Six AA for Ohio.

Taylor - RR, top 6
Mitcheff - pool final, top 4
Sergent - 4th in pool, 7/8
Cubberly - 4th in pool, 7/8
Moore - RR, top 6
Hardy- 4th in pool, 7/8

Comments
Taylor beat Rupp, Young, and Futrell already
Mitcheff has a win over Boyle already.
Sergent's losses both came in three periods to RR competitiors (Gunter and Thorn) and he beat the other RR competitor (Butler).
Cubberly beat Meade in a match he had to have just to AA. Losses to Howe and Bilodeau convincingly. Mead took 3rd in pool on points.
Moore lost to Polz, beat Johnson and LeValley.
Hardy beat DeBerry of substance, losses to Lower (non-AA, but NHSCA Srs AA) and Ortiz.

Non-AA comments
Minnard beat an AA in Eppert, but did lose to a returning AA (not AA this year) in Reisenauer before the loss to Taylor
Neibert got the horrible draw when I thought the good one was coming; lost to Triggas and Sanders. Best four on that side did AA though - Triggas, Sanders, Oliver, and Garner.
Zamaria lost both by fall today but had a positive tournament for him.
Harris took Wilson to three and lost to Nauman by fall, 5-2.
Dong was 5-2 with a bye, but did beat Ramos, who ended up getting the fourth AA spot on points. This was a pool where Torey Stewart, Justin Accordino, and Mario Mason are your round-robin with Shane Nay and Albert White NOT AA-ing.
Steve Wilson went 4-2 with losses to Hatchett then in three to Rutt. To show you how loaded this pool was, Hatchett nor Rutt AA'd.
Magrum is probably the most disappointing of the non-AA's on grounds he did not lose to a true name - Nielsen (though he was in the GR finals) and Ambrose.
Scales went 3-2 with a bye but had close losses to Mahan and had a close first period before getting pinned by Apland, both were AA's.
Most shocking was the fact that none of the four big-name Ohio 285's AA'd - that said, it was a brute of a weight. Wade went 4-2 with losses in three periods to Madison and then to Thompson; both these kids are now 2x double AA's (I think - I know they've AA'd twice in JN FS) before their senior year. Barlow went 4-2 with a bye with losses 1-0/1-0 to Thompson and in three periods to Owens (both AA'd), and had a win over IN state champ Adams. Kuhar went 3-2 with losses to Lane and Bradley. Hiles went 4-2 with losses to Reiff (not necessarily a name, but an AA) and NHSCA Srs champ Trice.

Is Triggas wrestling in the freestyle as well?

Yes. Lost to both Oliver and Sanders, fourth in pool. Goes for seventh against Patrick Hunter of New Jersey.

I know that. I am confused by it though because after the round Magrum had two losses, four were left, and one would think that means those kids AA.

Oliver, Sanders and Triggas were all in the same pool? On face value, that strikes me as odd. Is there any attempt to separate the best kids? Or were there other kids equally good in the other half?

If you read the national forum - thematforums.com - you'll see that this beaten to a bloody pulp.

The fundamental here is that USAWrestling has a separation system of three tiers (in a nutshell): L1 - JN FS champion, L2- JN FS AA, CN FS champ and/or AA, L3- other positive accomplishments (not sure which ones exactly).

Sanders was the only L1. Triggas and Oliver were L2's along with some others. The L2's got split out based on pairing procedure. The pairers do not care about subjective opinion. Such is life.

I happened to think that the other side had more DEPTH though (beyond the AA list).
