Besides the Buckeyes, here's an Ohio team on the move upward, Kent State took 4th out of 16 teams at the Virginia Duals. Also:
After
Kurt Gross
won all five matches he was named the Virginia Duals Tournament MVP, which is the first time a member of the Kent State wrestling program has ever won this prestigious award. Because of his outstanding performance, Kurt was also named Kent State Athlete of the Month, and the MAC Wrestler of the Week. Congratulations Kurt Gross!!!
Dustin Kilgore won his fourth open tournament of his young career.
The redshirting freshman won all five matches at the Kent State Open, to take his record to 22-1. Dustin will compete in one more open tournament before he starts the freestyle season.
Kent State is now ranked 25th.
This is the third year in a row KSU has been ranked nationally.
Kent also has
six wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in the country:
125: #18 Nic Bedelyon
133: #15 Danny Mitcheff
141: #16 Drew Lashaway
165: #17 Kurt Gross
184: #20 Eric Chine
285: #15 Jermail Porter
WHAT WEIGHT IS GROSS? Kurt certified at 157 pounds early in the year for the Penn State Open.
As coach Jim Andrassy tells it
: when Kurt became eligible for the second semester, he tried to make 157 for the Southern Scuffle and was unsuccessful. After sitting down with Kurt, his father, and the rest of the staff, we feel Kurt can focus more on improving his wrestling skills rather then having the daily weight struggles. So far it has worked. Kurt has defeated seven ranked wrestlers this year!
Coach Andrassy explains
:
Obie Simpson
transferred to Kent State University in hopes of being
the new starter at 165 pounds for the Golden Flashes
. With Kurt’s late decision to move to 165, we have decided to redshirt Obie this year. Obie will be working on his degree progress and his grades while learning the Kent State training philosophies, which are much different then those of his old school, North Carolina State. Obie is improving every day and will be a fine addition to next year’s lineup when Kurt graduates at the end of this year.

Smart move by Kent to move up Gross. He's terrific at the higher weight class. I think he's a legit AA candidate at 165 pounds as only a healthy Perry is dominant here.

I think Kent has 3 legit wrestlers who can AA. I really, really hope they get at least 1. Plus, two of those kids are going to be returners. If you add in Kilgore next year, they will be taking another step forward for next year. Oh, and I forgot Bedelyon (sp)... He will only get better with training with Coach Moore. He will also have Troy Opfer in the room next year to work with (who has looked great this year).

I was at the Kent v CSU match last winter and Tom Manning (coaches for Kent) asked me if I knew of any good 125 prospects that they should pursue. I had none in mind as it seemed Ohio's best had already committed elsewhere. Several months later, I saw they'd signed Bedelyon. I didn't know a thing about him and I suspect that would be true of most anyone outside of PA.
What a find this kid has been! He doesn't just win--he murders people. The half he runs is similar to the one Paul Donahoe and Jayson Ness use. I think this kid is going to be a multiple AA. Right now he is anchoring a terrific trio of Kent lower wts.
Lashaway over Headlee was also a big win. Nice victory for Kent over a talented Pitt squad.
Wait until next year when they add Kilgore to this lineup.

Keep it up FLASHES!!!!
Great to see two Ohio Programs doing well this year. Tom Ryan is doing an amazing job, if it weren't for what he has done the past year I think alot more people would be talking about what a great job Jim Andrassy has been doing. The last three years
2006 Ended the year ranked in the top 25, 5 National Qualifiers out of the MAC conference
2007 Ended the year ranked in teh top 25, 5 National Qualifiers out of the MAC conference
2008 Currently ranked #23 hopefully on the way up, 6 guys ranked in the top 20, AA to come??? Sure do hope this is the year.

If not this year, they will get an AA in the next few out of the trio of Bedelyon, Mitcheff, and Kilgore.

I think Kurt Gross will place this year. He's terrific at 165 and has beaten several ranked guys this season. This weight class has one star--Perry--two great young talents (Spons and Lewnes)--then a lot of comparable guys. Look for Gross to beat a guy like Diffenbach or Reader to place.

I know that everyone is excited with the job that Tom Ryan has done at Ohio State, but Kent State has quietly risen to their highest national ranking ever.
Let's also remember that Mitcheff, Lashaway, and Chine are only Juniors. Then you have a fine group of freshman in Bedelyon, Clopton, Kilgore, and Barlow. They should only get better.

I saw Clopton a week ago at a Shaker dual meet. Now that he's shaken off some injuries, he looks ripped. Definitely in shape and excited to wrestle in the future.

Pat, you are correct. The roster had him listed as a Junior but his bio shows him as a RS Sophomore. Thanks for the correction.
